Solstice Moon Pictures
Last Wednsday night,my son and I walked our dog to Shoop Park to see the solstice moon. Beautiful night, couldn't ask for better weather. I brought along my digital camera to take some pictures. Only 5 out of 18 pictures I took came out. The rest were junk. I used a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2. Didn't use a tripod(don't even have one). Hope you all enjoy the pictures! Thank you.

Thanks for the pics...some nice detail on the fourth one in particular...what type of zoom lens does that camera have?
drewzepmeister
Is that called "shooting the Moon"?
Beautiful color on the pictures, drew. Thanks for posting them. They did turn out pretty good.
Drew, I ws down there, too! I had my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 with me. No tripod - I set the shutter to "twilight" - and all of my shots were blurry. This is probably the best shot: http://pictureposter.allbrand.nu/pictures/tito/Picture%205016s.JPG I also shot some videos with the same camera. In those, the moon is jumping all over the place becasue of no tripod.
Very nice pics!
Oops, I was at Pershing Park, not Shoop - actually, "Samuel Myers Park" (the 11th St. beach).
Hey orbs, that is where I was too. Didn't see ya. I forgot to bring my camera. Just sat in the car and enjoyed the view.
Very nice Drew, thanks for sharing!!
I am sure I was in bed, dead to the world and out like a light, but I did enjoy seeing some at 2am when I got up... not awake enough to think of the camera, but then I was more worried about the nuts that it would bring out to us at work... why does every good thing have an equally not good thing?? not fair! We should be able to enjoy that great view and not have to deal with the loonies that result from it :)
I was on foot.

That last line is actually Jack Kerouac's.
Thank you everybody for the kind comments. I appreciate them.
Hale-the zoom lens I've got on my camera are built in. On the inside it says 2,8-3,7/6-72 Varlo-Tessar. On the outside it says 12x Optical Zoom,if that means anything to you. I'm just a novice tinkering around with an expensive toy.
SER-very funny-should of had that for my headline:)
Orbs-I thought your picture turned out pretty good.Very scenic.I found out it works the best with if you use the program auto setting. I tinkered around with the other settings and they looked blurry and out of focus.
Geeze orbs, that might have been me arriving for the moon fest in your video. Too bad we didn't get the chance to say hey. I was with my son. Next time we plan ahead.
Orbs, just saw your video. That looked it turned out also. I didn't even think of using my video setting.
Check out this picture of a solstice moon by "astrophotographer" Anthony Ayiomamitis:

Well, yes, those numbers do mean something to me!
Keep practicing and experimenting...you are having some success and just have to learn all the settings and what works best under what conditions.
Orbs-awesome picture! That site you mentioned-I probably could spend hours looking through it. Thanks!
Hale-don't keep me in dark-what do those numbers mean?
The numbers mean the lens can operate in focal ratios from f/2.8 o f/3.7. The focal ration is the focal length of the lens divided by its diameter (the diameter can be varied by changing how far you open the shutter). Low f ratios are good for wide angle views/low light conditions. High focal ratios provide zoomed in views but require longer exposure times. The camera is also less sensitive to camera shake at lower f ratios (although I noticed when I looked up this camera that it has electronic image stabilization which can help for small shakes).
6-72 tells you that the lens can vary its focal length from 6mm to 72mm. Note that the ratio of these two numbers is 12, and your lens is a 12x zoom lens.
That lens is a Carl Zeiss lens and they make excellent lenses.
Thanks Hale! That was an interesting piece of information. I learned something new today:)
Well, I want to say again that your pictures are awesome, drew. I'll try the program setting. I can tell that you've actually read at least some of the instruction manual. And hale-bopp, of course, appears to have written it. I just kinda mess around with my camera and see what happens. I really was interested in a camera for photos. I didn't think much about the video feature. Now I find that I shoot a lot of (boring) vids, too.
