Any of you irregulars ever ran for or held local office?

I am considering a run for local office next spring, and have to file papers in December. Have any of you irregulars ever ran for or help public office? Is now a good time for me to start to get organized? Any advice would be helpful!

Time is flying, shouldn't wait much longer....My advice? Get yourself out there to anyone and everyone who will listen. Name recognition is the biggest thing. What are you considering running for?

Lie like hell and get out of town a step ahead of the lynch mob.

Stu, good luck...the village needs some level heads.

And I think Orbs may know a few of the formers for Sturtevant!

Wow! Moving up from IFL Commish pretty quickly!

Seriously, good luck, Stu. I don't know much about the local politics there, but, from your posts, you clearly passionately care about your community, a very important trait for local officials. Just communicate that as well in your campaign as you do on the blogs.

Im still in the "just considering" mode, but I do want to have my ducks in a row just in case.....

Don't you have to fill out a form and then need a number of signatures. Your best advise/info can come from the secretaries. They always know what is going on.

stu - Even if you're only considering it - get out in the public now. Take advantage of any remaining festivals, picnics, etc. in your municipality or surrounding area. Anytime more than 20 people are gathering, try to be there. Meet as many probable voters as you can and make sure they know your name. Tell them you're thinking of running and listen for feedback. What they tell you will help you with a campaign platform should you decide to run.

A run for office in the Spring is tricky trying to do doors in Jan, Feb, March when you're freezing your A$$ off or sloshing through a foot of snow.

daily kenoshan is right - name recognition is HUGE! Maybe get your name out there with a well-crafted letter to the editor about an issue that's important locally...and network, network, network!

Good luck!

I ran for class VP in the 7th grade. I lost, so I don't recommend you hiring me as your campaign manager.

Anyone running for office has to have a really thick skin and nary a skeleton in the closet.

Good Luck, RW!

Read up on the finance laws, they are really tricky. I know a few years ago there was a seminar at CACI about running for office, they may still be doing it.

RW - I have been debating running for Alderman for the past couple years, but would be very interested in helping you out in any way I could. Let me know if you're interested and we can talk.
