Whether you’re a smoker and non-smoker some of our politicians are out of control.
What’s going to happen if this increase goes in to affect? Will more people quit smoking...sure they will and tax revenue will decline. You know the money grabbers in Washington will not accept that so it will have to be made up elsewhere.
The government has too many windows of opportunities where to get the money from; alcohol, gasoline, property taxes, individual income taxes and list goes on.
You may want to think about this and write your congress representative and urge him/her to vote down this increase. It will eventually affect everyone, smokers and non-smokers alike.

I remember quitting when they reached $1.00 a pack. We thought that was ridiculous at the time. Best thing I ever did was to quit, thanks for raising the price to help me make that decision....
However, most people don't quit due to the money factor. Most people will do without food or essential medication to buy cigarettes. The addiction to nicotine is so strong. Most smokers are poorer people who can't afford these increases.
However, there are two ways to look at this. Smoking does increase medical costs for everyone. Maybe there should be an increase to cover the increased costs, sort of a user tax....
Then again, maybe the "pushers" or the tobacco industry needs to step up and pay for the mess they are causing. It is all money based, folks. Nabisco who supplies your food also provides us with these coffin nails. It is all intertwined into our economy.
It has been such a long, strange trip watching tobacco go from socially accepted norm to the new leprosy. I remember the TV ads for cigarettes, throughout the 50's and into the 60's. The Flintstones smoked Winstons. It's just been amazing to witness the sea change in attitudes over the years. I have no solutions or suggestions. I'm an ex-smoker, too, and I agree that nicotine is highly addictive and an s.o.b. to kick.
And that's, er, psychic salsa, or something, in my pipe, um, ah....
