Advice to New Grads from Howard Troxler

I lived in Florida for many years and am a longtime fan of St. Petersburg Times columnist Howard Troxler. I was just out of school when I moved to Florida and reading his column helped instill a love of the area in me and the inspiration to start getting involved in local government, going to board meetings, writing letters, and speaking up when local officials were doing something stupid.

So I would like to point to his column today: "Advice to New Grads: Don't Be and Idiot". This column really captures a lot of good tips for bloggers (even though it is not explicitly about blogging). Even though a lot of people here do follow many of these guidelines, I have rarely seen all these spelled out so nicely in one place.

Roll Call

We have had many people join us in the last couple of days. So shout yourself out... who's here?

Finally, I Can Start Complaining About the Heat and Humidity

Looks like we're gonna get some summer weather. Now I can stop whining about how cold the spring has been and start bitching about the heat and humidity. My truck is 12 years old and the a/c won't hold a charge for the entire summer anymore. I'll probably go without it this year, but my apartment must be air conditioned. You'd think that after years of working outdoors, I'd be acclimatized to mugginess, but no way. I wilt in the heat. I have a friend who loves it when the temp soars into the 90's and everyone is dripping wet. He never sweats. I think that's creepy. I also think he is a Martian.

Idiot Tax

Should we initiate an Idiot Tax? Not only for idiots like these two, but everyday idiots? You know them, the ones we have to rescue because they try to drive across flooded rivers or go out on the ice in May?

JT's Stock hits new low!

"Lee Enterprises Inc. (LEE Quote Chart News PowerRating) gapped open slightly lower on Thursday and fell sharply to a range within the first five minutes of trading. In the last five minutes the stock has picked up volume and dropped again.

Currently, shares are trading at $6.49 down $0.16 from Wednesday's close.
The decline has extended recent losses and has taken the stock to a new multi-year low. "

Better start firing people at the JT! I nominate Gery (Im so) Woefull and B.O.B (Ironfist)

Public, private, what?

I came in through the registration so don't know if this is all public or private. Oh and gosh, how will others filter through? Will it be easy or hard for the misfits to gain entrance? Misfits as in the Garys of the world. Will they be censored? Banned, tolerated and shouted down? Maybe even voted off the island in a blogger form of survivor? Maybe if it gets bad we could even have Brandon moderate for us.... Now that I can say Fuck, it isn't necessary.

Before and After

Prior to being freed from heavy handed censorship and deletion:

After being freed:

What if this name sticks?

Is "JT" copyright infringement? What if "they" claim that it is?

What will we tell them it stands for?

It's Coming!

Only a month away:

It's been so cold that I haven't thought much about the 4th of July, or summer, at all. Do you do something special on the 4th? To be honest, that clip is about as much of last year's parade as I saw. I'm not big on crowds or noise, but I can get into the festivities. I loved it as a child. We lived a short block from the parade route. I remember getting up very early and going out to the curb and trying to fall back asleep while saving our spaces. Never worked. I was always too excited to sleep.

And I remember the years when it became an all-night party. Drunks lined Main Street from dusk July 3rd until the parade was over the next day. It was insane.

I've avoided the fireworks, or at least the north side, because of the crowds and chaos.

This year the 4th is on a Friday, so I suspect it's going to be a long weekend for the police. Let's all be careful out there.

Lets have a discussion....

AP is reporting that Obama outlasted the Hillary political machine, which leaves the question.... who's his running mate? Hillary (If I was not still with Bill I would have won this already) Clinton? John (Great Hair) Edwards? Russ (Wisconsin looks like my hand) Feingold? Who would you like to see with Barry. Sorry I mean Barack.

More and more people are suffering from Irregularity

I know of at least eight of us (Myself, Orbs, KK, , KC, SER Drew, Cheers, LizMom, if I forgot anyone i'm sorry!) that are here currently. If anyone else wants to make themselves known to the community, shout yourself out here!

If you had 1,000 dollars...........

If you had 1,000 dollars and had to give it to charity, what organization(s) would you give too and why?

I would give 500.00 to The Tony Stewart Foundation which helps help care for chronically ill children, drivers injured in motorsports activities and to support other charitable organizations in the protection of various animal species. and 500.00 to Canine Companions for Independence which provides highly-trained assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities, free of charge.

Bugs!

I live near the lake and walk down there when I can. Today I was greeted by swarms of gnats, or tsetse flies, or whatever they are - those clouds of tiny flying insects that follow your head around for a few seconds and get into your nose, eyes, ears. That's one major drawback to warmer weather: bugs. I'm not skittish about spiders or things (and they make great toys for Charlie, my cat), but I find mosquitoes and biting flies very irritating. I want to bite them back!

Tornado Oddities

(AP) As residents in Hugo begin to move on from last week's tornado, some say they noticed a few bizarre things amid all the damage. Jason Akins said the twister unwound a roll of toilet paper in his bathroom draped it across the countertop, then rewound it in the sink. The toilet paper didn't even rip.

"All I could say was, 'You have got to be kidding me,'" Akins recalled.

He also said that winds overturned sofas and ripped away his roof, but dishes of cat food and water were untouched. The cat food was actually still in the bowl.

While hurricanes, floods and blizzards create broad swaths of damage, tornados seem to have tiny fingers that can reach in to small areas and cause some weird mischief. Some say tornados have their own personalities.

Terry Clarkin said the Hugo tornado stuck four steak knives in the yard _ and they landed in a perfect square, with the blades in the dirt about three inches.

Across the street, a tree had been stripped of leaves, and instead was filled with pink wads of insulation looking much like a tree from a cartoon.

Some residents made interesting findings amid the wreckage.

Five-year-old Lauren Ford found a red Spider-Man T-shirt in her back yard. One neighbor found a fishing boat against the remains of a front porch. Others found canoes, checkbooks or toys.

Jeff Janus said the tornado protected him.

He was in his front yard when the storm hit, and he ran inside and grabbed his dog and cat.

"I saw people's houses flying by," he said. He didn't make it to the basement, but instead crouched down in the hallway, with one animal in each arm. He said the storm tore off the bedroom doors and placed them almost gently on top of him _ shielding him from falling debris.

When the storm passed, he said, he spit shreds of insulation from his mouth, but he felt the doors saved him.

"I find it hard to believe I am actually here," said Janus.

Webhead wants a meeting

Webhead is proposing a meeting between the bloggers and the JT. Opinions? (And I mean real opinions, not the moderated kind on some other sites)

By the way, just wondering, now that our favorite psychic has mentioned this site will Brenden be looking at it?

Post Test

This is a test of the RWWackoStu blog posting system. If this was a damn JT blog, the bastards would have deleted it already. F Them!

More Power to us. Thanks Orbs for starting this little bastion of rebellion.
