Northern Lights and Fire Rainbow over Yellowknife , Yukon , Canada
THIS NEXT PICTURE IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA.
THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED THIS WEEK ON THE IDAHO / WASHINGTON BORDER. THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1 HOUR.
CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20.000 FEET IN THE AIR, WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

This is so coincidental...I had dropped Hale a note asking for a 'simple' explanation of the Northern Lights for the young woman I am tutoring. Guess I'll print this out for her as well. She is fascinated with the Northern Lights! Aren't we all???

I saw them once years ago in Racine outside the Stables on Lathrop.. pretty awesome, but nothing like these.
I'd love to see them in person like these. I'd be awestruck!
I remember seeing the Aurora Borealis right here in Racine in the early 90's. It was kinda neat watching it,but it was nowhere as spectacular as these pictures.
I too would love to see these in person but not if I have to endore 40 below and see it from one of those T-pees. I'll settle for looking at the beautiful pictures.
Abby, I noticed that thermometer too.. only goes from -50 to +50!!
I think they probably have heat in those teepees. I think it would be an awesome way to watch!
That fire rainbow is just fantastic.
I saw a fire rainbow...over Mt. St. Helens back in 2000...great backdrop for it!

I had seen the northern lights a few times when I was up in Florance, WI. It is awesome how the dance in the sky!

I saw the Northern Lights when I was a child on our farm outside of Oconto Falls, WI...my Mom dragged us all out to see them. She loved the sky and the stars. Oh why, oh why did I not listen to her lectures about astronomy!
I thought I remembered seeing them more as a child. I asked one of our resident science teachers about it. He said probably true... we now have more light pollution around here which makes it more difficult to see. The pics are very cool, SER, thanks for sharing!
I would be curious to know what Indian Legend says about the Northern Lights.
Nice picks. When we were in Alaska last June, one of the highly educated east coast member of the tour asked the tour guide if we would be able to see the Northern Lights at night.....DUH!!! The tour guide almost busted out laughing but was very diplomatic in her answer. But I think she would have rather said, "JA SURE IF THE SUN WOULD EVER GO DOWN!!!"
