A Friend Needs Help
My friend is searching for a Nursing Home for her mom who is failing. She had a fall and now is unable to go home again. We can look up all the facts on these homes, but sometimes word of mouth is better than anything.
I'd heard terrible things about Ridgewood. My mother in law is at Lincoln Lutheran-hy 31 & Byrd ave. She likes it but if you have to wait for somebody to come, it's always quite a wait if you need help. She's pretty independent so it's not such an issue for her, but frustrating for those that need to.
Yes, she is in Racine. I've heard pro's and con's on Lincoln. My aunt was there (dementia) and although I didn't get there very often, I never thought it was a bad place. Just so very depressing.
The staff (rn's) are more likely to deal with you at Lincoln...Much easier to get information, much friendlier, they actually called me at home quite often with test results, etc. I never had that from Ridgewood.
The management staff at Lincoln are devious. I've found that everything is money driven....to the point of downright lying to you (and they aren't very good at hiding it.)
All nursing home care stinks. Yes, you wait 45 minutes for the bathroom (while on diuretics), you get cold food, wait for something to drink, wait for everything. You also get mean and rude CNA's sometimes. One dropped my mom to the floor and didn't follow procedure and report it. You have to watch, watch, watch everything.
Today we learn about Kenosha's nursing care. I sure don't want to wind up in this situation when I am older.
Oddly enough, I was out looking for the latest Christian the Lion video on the Today Show and they are covering this very thing. As a matter of fact, US News graded nursing homes. I believe Wheaton came up as a good one as well as St. Ann's Rest Home?
My mom is living in apartments for seniors run by Lincoln Lutheran. NOT a nursing home. No major complaints about the management, but the building material is shoddy and it is poorly constructed. (Modern, "improved" construction methods of slap and paste.) Wind literally blows through the walls and out of electrical outlets.
Unfortunately, I only hear the horror stories about nursing homes (everywhere). I very seriously plan on dying before that happens to me - by my own hand if necessary.
Mom was there for a very short time. I felt so bad when I had to severe connections. If I was 62 (their minimum age) I'd move there in a heartbeat. Beautiful place. Everyone... all staff, were very friendly.

Mary, is your friend looking in Racine? I have some experience. Unfortunately, nothing I've found is very good...

Thanks guys! I will forward the info to my friend.
Mary, I've heard good things about Wheaten too, but you can't get in. There is a huge waiting list. Also heard good things about Union Grove.
First impressions on Kenosha Washington Manor are good. Way too early to tell though.
Thanks KK
She sent an e-mail today stating she needs assisted living.
Has anyone heard anything about Harbor House (formerly Westview) on Ohio?
I thought I heard they were doing a pretty good job, but don't bet the mortgage on my memory.

Thanks again guys. Turns out my friend went to Harbor House and fell in love with the place. So that is where I believe she is headed.
