I just got back from a star party out at Biosphere 2. I snapped a neat picture of Biosphere 2 with Orion setting in the background.
The building itself is not lit up. It is illuminated by the security lights around the facility. I just thought this was a neat opportunity to photograph a unique local landmark at night.

Very cool picture. Thanks for sharing. When you make the picture bigger, you can see all of the stars of Orion, not just the distinctive three star belt.
I remember way back when they first inhabited the biosphere. There were problems and they had to release air or bring in fresh air. Sort of negated what the original intent was.
Hale, I'm sure you have been inside many times. Tell us more about it.
Do they still do serious long range experiments where scientists may be kept inside for months at a time or is it more of an attraction/education center/science museum now?
Yes, cool picture.
How old is the biosphere? I remember when they first went into it, it was all over the news. Another one of those great things, which get lost over time.
Thanks for the remembrance.
True confession, I am a wikipedia junkie. I just went to there and read about this topic... Yes, hale, I always teach kids about reliable sources and I'm familiar with wikiality. They just have everything there though. Interesting stuff. Thanks for sparking my curiosity!
wiki's biosphere 2 page
Very nice picture.
Very nice pic, hale!
That's okay, kk...not like you are citing Wikipedia as an authority (and there is some good info on there).
I have never been inside the Biosphere although I have been there several times. The U of Arizona took it over a few years ago and are using it for research, but they are not trying to have people live the self-sufficiently. I have to get in there and find out what they are doing sometime!
