Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Rock and Roll Revival! I grew up listening to music before the days of MTV and videos. Like everybody else, I listened to music over the radio. I became intriged by song from Kiss, Calling Dr. Love So, I went to the store and bought my first album ever, Love Gun. I had no idea what the band looked like or what. Come to find out, it was them on the cover! The bizarre costumes and make-up! Cool, I thought. I was only twelve years old and became obcessed with Kiss.
My interest in Kiss waned over the years as I picked upon more talented artists like Led Zeppelin. I grew away from the gimmicks that filled rock music. I became more focused on the music itself. Personally, I don't care what they look like anymore, as long as the music is good.
We live in an image conscience world. Where first impression "matters." You can't judge a book by it's cover. The same applies to music. So my question is-should a band an image, gimmick, or controversy to sell themselves or just let the music do the talking?
BTW-I still think Kiss rocks!!!

Showmanship is all a part of it. It is a fun part of it. However, it, alone, doesn't make or break a band for me. I think I'm in another growing stage. I am enjoying bands who work in a variety of styles right now.
While I grew up with older sisters who had excellent taste in music... (Beatles, Moody Blues, Santana, especially Spooky) the first song that got my personal music mojo working was, "I Shot the Sheriff" by Eric Clapton, originally done by Bob Marley.
Drew, you are right. Our writing skills and subject matter have improved. I am enjoying your blogs more and more every time.
It's always about the music first for me. I grew up pre- music videos. I heard the songs (usually on the radio) before I saw the artists, if I ever saw them at all.
Image is a very big part of it, though. Elvis' early bad boy image helped hype his career and record sales. And lookit Britney. Still, I don't pay much attention to the antics if I don't like the music.
Imagine is what my ring tone is on my cell...yep, tell me all about the BEATLES...loved them as a young girl (hey, I'm older, way older, than you, Drew!)Eric Clapton..oh yeah...don't get me started...Stones...Stop, just stop.
kk-you are right. Showmanship is a part of it. It also give the artist an extra creativity to express themselves. And thanks, kk, for the compliment. I've been enjoying everybody's blogs more and more!
Orbs-Image is a big part of getting records sold. I always have felt that the music alone stands the test of time.
Beejay-Beatles,the Stones, Eric Clapton-they all rock!
