"Sex Offenders Welcome"

"PAHOKEE, Fla. — No sign marks Miracle Park, a cluster of one-story yellow buildings surrounding a small church that caters to one of society's most despised demographics: sex offenders.

"Since the development opened eight months ago, the minister who runs it has recruited former inmates by distributing brochures in Florida prisons and plugging it in sermons at the lockups. Some 35 sex offenders now live in the complex about three miles from Pahokee, a poor farming community of 6,000 wedged into sugar cane fields of the Everglades."

Did We Dodge One?

How do you detect threats to national security and still preserve privacy and the Fourth Amendment? I don't know how, but I'm grateful that we have people who can sniff this sort of thing out. Ever since 9/11, a small, scared part of me has been waiting for the other shoe to drop. After the horror faded, the anxiety remained. I don't know if life will ever be quite the same again knowing that mass murder is the goal of some who walk among us.

The good, the bad and the ugly..And Im not talking about Clint Eastwood - UPDATE

A company called Fisker automotive got a loan from the Obama administration for building electric cars. You can see them here.
Contray to what our resident liberals think, I dont have a problem with the electric cars. Those are the good. The bad is that the loan was $529 million! The ugly is the cars that are being financed with our tax dollars cost $89,700. Why is the White House subsidizing cars that only Hollywood and the uber rich will ever consider owning?

UPDATE: According to the WSJ this car company is backed by Mr Green hot air himself, Al Gore.

WOMEN WHO KNOW THEIR PLACE

Barbara Walters, of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to, and are happy to, maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, 'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, 'Land Mines.'

Moral of the story, no matter what language you speak or where you go, is:

BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A SMART WOMAN

Dear Madame Zoltar

Madame Zoltar is taking the week off.

She sends her greetings: "Hello, my ripe radishes! How are you?"

She gives her advice: "Hear everything, see everything, say nothing."

She solicits your input: "Send your tears and fears to: madamezoltar@jtirregulars.com."

She bids her adieu: "See you next week, my dears. Valvoline!"

A cowboy

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. '

Have you ever done anything of particular merit?' St. Peter asked..

'Well, I can think of one thing,' the cowboy offered. 'On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers, who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him in his face ... kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, 'Now, back off!! Or I'll kick the s*** out of all of you!'

St. Peter was impressed, 'When did this happen?'

'Just a couple of minutes ago….....'

Equinoxes

Today is the Fall Equinox...and its finally in the 60's at night here! Just in time for our Equinox, Cassini has released a spectacular image of Saturn taken on its recent equinox.

Saturn-equinox

This is not one picture, but a mosaic of 75 images taken by Cassini! Download the full 7227x3847 image if you dare!

Saturn takes a lot longer to go around the Sun, so it's equinoxes occur about every 15 years. The rings are almost edge on to the Sun, so they are not brightly illuminated. Cassini was out of the ring plane when it took this picture so we get a nice view looking "down" on the rings. They released some other images as well you can check out.

Just for good measure, the New York Times profiled the head of the Cassini Imaging Team, Carolyn Porco. I have met her a few times and she gives great Saturn talks.

"Beer for brain injury? Maybe"

"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who suffer a traumatic brain injury from a car crash or other mishap are more apt to survive if they had been drinking at the time of the injury, according to a study published Monday.

"The finding 'raises the intriguing possibility' that giving alcohol to brain injured patients may improve outcome, the study team suggests in the Archives of Surgery.

"Alcohol and driving 'is and will always continue to be bad -- it contributes to over 40 percent of traffic-related fatalities,' first author Dr. Ali Salim of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles emphasized in an email to Reuters Health.

"'However, of those patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury who survive their initial insult, those with alcohol in their system seem to have a slight survival advantage compared to those without alcohol in their system,' Salim noted."

Money Problems? You May Be Senile

Money problems 'signal dementia'

"Declining financial skills are detectable in patients in the year before they develop Alzheimer's, according to US researchers.

"The researchers say this could be a useful indicator for doctors supporting people with memory problems."
