Pumpernickel bread
The other day, I bought some pumpernickel bread...got to thinking about the origin of the word 'pumpernickel.' Ran a search on the internet and found the direct translation to be: SATAN'S GAS
Pumper=flatulence
Nickel= Satan
Now isn't that curious??? Apparently, the original bread made folks incur flatulence.
What kind of useless information do you have stored in your brain???

What you see in your picture is "Phoney" Pumpernickel bread found all over the U.S. The only REAL Pumpernickel is SQUARE and HARD, and can be found at O & H Bakery. That OTHER stuff is DARK rye bread if you ask me. (which you didn't) but, Oh Well. Better than just the bread causing gas, is to put hard boiled eggs (sliced) on top of buttered Pumpernickel, with Anchovies on top of the eggs. UM, UM, Good.
Pumpernickel. The only use I know for pumpernickel bread is to make cannibal sandwiches.
I cannot remember the name but there was a restaurant across the St. from city hall called Danish something.
They had pumpernickel bread that was really good. For some reason I think I got ham on pumpernickel.
Not wishing to risk the wrath of Toad, I have put a new picture of pumperniekel up there...with some weird Germanic spelling!

I made a loaf of bread with a can of beer. My brother gave me a recipe mix for X-mas. It was extrememly easy and very yummy fresh out of the oven. Read the comments on using regular flour and upping the sugar a bit to make this recipe taste like the more expensive boxed mix.

2 questions that have driven me crazy for some time now, what exactly IS pumpernickel and what in the world is mincemeat, other than scary sounding???
Pumpernickle and Danish blue cheese! Oh is that good! Now that combination eaten in enough volume will create a fart the devil herself wouldn't be able to tolerate.
Logjam: THAT'S a fact. I bought an entire 4 pound wheel of Maytag Blue Cheese from Newton, Iowa earler in "09" I'm down to my last pound. It's Blue cheese to die for. I only wish I had the REAL Pumpernickel from O & H bakery.
Beejay: I was NOT picking on YOU about the phoney bread. It's just a fact that people that have never had the real thing think soft dark rye is Pumpernickel. I hold no ILL WILL toward your post.

Oh, Toad, I was just giving you a rough time right back.....this loaf that I have is pumpernickel, not dark rye...it is baked at the store...probably not as good as I could get in good ole' WI though....
I'm such a bad dane... I don't like pumpernickel. Think you could probably shingle the roof with it. Couldn't eat stinky cheese, cannibal sandwiches, or pickled herring.
Oh, the herring thing...yuck....I have done the cannibal sandwiches though with raw onion and lots of pepper! I thought that was a Polish/German thing....I am half a Dane and half a German.
I've eaten pumpernickel my entire life. I stop at O&H whenever I or mom need some. Delicious. I've never noticed any increase in flatulence associated with it. Cabbage, however, can have that effect on me.
The next time you have a home project going on and need to strip some paint, call me over and feed me Venison and inions! I can save you a lot of time.

beejay, no wonder you know how I think. I, too, am 1/2 dane and 1/2 german. I always tell people I'm DANGER-ISH.
think we could make a German, Danish club here.. my mom's side is German, my dads side is Danish and Irish.. Our poor kids have that on top of Mexican and Swedish..
As for pumpernickel I can eat it from time to time, not a huge favorite but not a dislike either.. just have to be in teh mood for it.. I have not tried it with the Danish blue cheese, will definitely have to do that someday. What is good with Danish blue cheese and a favorite around here at Christmas time is gingerbread cookies.. a great dessert.
