Here's a new way to see a shuttle launch...from a plane. One of the advantages of having lots of compact recording devices, when something really cool happens, someone can record and share it.
The is a pretty wide no fly zone around shuttle launches, so this plane was pretty far away. The very end of the video look like the SRBs just burnt out. Most of the smoke and flame you see on launch come from the SRBs as the shuttles main engines emit much less smoke and flame.
Oh, and watch it in 720p, full screen mode!Reprinted with permission from the Half-Astrophysicist Blog.

I would love to see a launch. The power of those rockets is amazing! I forgot how many million horse power they put out.
That was neat. Thanks for posting. I'd love to see a launch too. My cousin lives very close and has witnessed many launches. He described the enormity and awesomeness of it even at a distance.
That's beautiful.
Wouldn't it be awesome to see a launch? Thanks Hale for posting this.
Yes, seeing a launch live was awesome, Mary :)
I know a guy who knows a guy so I got into the VIP section for last May's launch of Atlantis!
That is really cool!!
I've always wanted too see a shuttle launch...
I was supposed to be there for the launch of the Swift satellite in 2004 using a Delta II rocket (model 7310 for those keeping score at home). Well, I was there for it but a last minute problem with the range safety system delayed it and I couldn't stay for the launch. I got the call about 1:30 in the morning as I was getting ready to go to the pad for the tower roll back.
It wasn't a wasted trip, however. I got the launch pad tour including the elevator ride to the top of the rocket while I was there!
very cool, kind like a reverse shooting star :)
