Lincoln Day Dinner Protest
These pnotos where taken yesterday at the Lincoln Day Dinner Protest on Hy20 by the Marriott hotel from around 4:30 until 6pm. Lots and lots of people, great turnout!!!
I was there, freezing my pa-tootie off. There had to be 800-1000 people lining the roads.... or probably more! It was wonderful!!!
I'd say half of the folks who passed by on Hwy 20 or on Oakes Road gave us the thumbs up or honked in support. There were the occasional ones who flipped the bird. How upstanding and adult-like to be flipping off teachers, other union workers, mothers and children who were out there to support the funding of public education. Now I know where some of these kids we deal with learn their unsavory behavior.
I don't know why it is assumed that this blog is non political.. Has always been political in some way..
I am no where near the protests, can only go by what people who were there say.. I think it's good that people are out and being active in the political scene and should definitely be applauded. I even thought it was great that people were out protesting the arrival of our President, because it's their right to make their voices heard if they are unhappy with how things are going. I might not agree with their message, but they have the right to give it.. I did see a few videos of the Racine protest of the GOP dinner and cannot say I heard any intimidation or saw any thuggish behavior, but they are only short videos so cannot say for sure. Just because you may not agree with it does not necessarily make it thuggish, just other people out there protesting, sometimes loudly, about something you do not agree with.
Life is political. I can't turn on the television or the computer without being bombarded with something political.
I stood and waved and smiled to passer-byes, especially cute kids in car seats with their parents... If you are intimidated by that, you are a wimp, insane... or have a guilty conscience.
Welcome, Anonymous. Thank you for your input. I wasn't going to comment in this blog because I don't want to stick my ### in a wringer, but I have to agree with Why Not concerning the political aspects of this site.
As I recall it, we split away from The Journal Times because of the censorship there, political and/or otherwise. We agreed that each person here would be responsible for his or her own blogs, free to say whatever he or she wanted. This site was founded on freedom of speech.
I have never considered the JTI nonpolitical, just nonpartisan. I've felt proud that people with political viewpoints as diverse as RWWackoStu and hale-bopp choose to post here. The pride I take is in our tolerance and respect for each others' opinions.
I think, perhaps, you misunderstood us. Again, thank you for commenting. Please feel free to post here anytime.
I have a lot of pride in the JTI, as well. Our hair may stand on end and might bristle once in awhile, but we do have tolerance.... I take back the wimp comment. It wasn't specifically pointed at anyone (maybe the drive-byes who flipped the bird at me), but after looking at how I spit that word out, it could have be taken the wrong way.
One of the great things about this blog is the ability to be political without the fear of hate or banning or losing what friendships you have developed here. Believe me, if that was true there is no way Hale and KK would be talking to me! But there is so much more than that, Here you can speak your mind, and even though you dont agree with it, you must defend the right to speak it. And up until the last couple of months, our discussions here were almost everything except politics. But the cool thing here is wihtout that free expression and respect, I wouldnt learn any science from Hale, nor be able to talk music with KK, both of which I enjoy. By only limiting your self to one topoc and excluding people for that one topic, you lose the ability to discuss and learn from these interesting, diverse and wise people. There is no way I would be standing at a rally next to KK, but I sure as hell would be at a concert!
I have had to learn that one political item does not a personality make. And I had to grow up a little to see that.
I think it is really something when you get this many people to come out and brave the cold to show where they stand on the situation.
You have to admit, if this bill was so great for the state, "why has there not been crowds the size of protesters for it as there has been against it. In Madison alone there have been crows of 85,000!
They have had crowds larger then any protest against Viet Nam War.
Don't make him admit to anything. Don't piss him off! He's standing in line to buy me a beer, for god's sake! :D We are family. We may not always like each other, but deep down we love each other!

glad the turn out was good..
Nice work...and I love the Proper of SER notice!
looked like a great turn out, nice pics SER!!! :)
So much for this blog being non political.
In this protest people were yelling at and trying to intimidate normal citizens attending a dinner.
This was disgusting thuggish behavior.
I for one find it a shame that this behavior would be celebrated.

Here is the very first blog posted on this site: http://www.jtirregulars.com/2008/06/welcome.html It doesn't say anything about avoiding politics.
By the 11th blog, politics were already in play: http://www.jtirregulars.com/2008/06/lets-have-discussion.html

Stu, are we still talking? ;> Glad to hear it. I'll stand next to you at a concert, um... you buying me a beer?
I never thought we weren't talking KK!
Things may get heated, but hopefully you never thought that I disrespected you or minimized your right to freely express your opinion.
If I did, for that I am truly sorry. We dont agree on this issue, but life is more than this issue.

Amen! So where's my beer?
Can I buy a Guinness for KK & Drew?
