It's National Library Week, April 10-16, 2011

Woot! I libraries. Here's a link to the American Library Association's webpage on National Library Week: http://www.ala.org/ala/conferencesevents/celebrationweeks/natlibraryweek/index.cfm

The Racine Public Library is also holding some special events to mark the occasion. Here's the Journal Times story on that: http://www.journaltimes.com/lifestyles/faith-and-values/article_973bcf58-6248-11e0-a11f-001cc4c03286.html

Go out and hug a library today.

I ♥♥♥ the library. Most of my music comes from them. Thank you taxes (ones I don't mind paying) and local contributors! A well read, art inclined and learned community is a productive, self sustaining, and employable community.

I vaguely remember the old library on 7th and Main, where the Historical Museum is now. I think my sister took me there once. I never was in the old Uptown Library.

Remember card catalogs? Back in the mid 90's, I stopped in at Parkside's library and they had replaced the card catalog with computers with Windows installed on them. I was lost. We had computers at the auto repair shop in Chicago, but those were early, DOS models. That's when I knew I had to become computer literate. And I knew I had to get online when I kept seeing TV commercials where they said, "To learn more, go to www.whatever.com."

I used to buy books, read them then shelf them, now I do the library and go buy gas with the money I've saved, to get to the library.

When I was in grade school we had to learn how to use the catalog cards. The everyone was giving a little research project and they took us to the downtown library and you had about 2 hours to finish you project. At the time it was fun.

We had to learn to use the card catalog as well.. But I cannot imagine there were many after us that had to learn it..

My dad talks about how he helped them move the books from the old library to the new, by taking a stack of books in hand and dropping them off at the new one.. talk about child labor!! =)

For me I remember when they rebuilt the downtown library and made it bigger.. that was pretty cool..

Last time I was there I brought the girls to the childrens book reading things they have every week.. it was fun.

I never figured the card catalogs out. I was never able to find the Ace's.
