The people from Cosmic Corner have met with the powers-that-be in Racine and have lost their appeal to keep their colors. They are considered part of the downtown redevelopment zone, or BID, or DRC, or something, and therefore people who have absolutely nothing to do with their business can dictate how they present themselves to the public.
Ain't free enterprise grand?

I didn't see Drew's post. This just sucks. Try to get a little color in the city and this is what happens.
From what I heard, the northern end of the zone is Hamilton St., and because they are on it, they must comply. I would bet, though, that if you tried to do this to any business on a major street in Racine, some excuse would be found to stop you.
It does raise issues about a business' rights vs. a city's "rights" to control business and/or development. How much control is too much control?
I would move to the edge of the city limits. Better yet, move to Mauston, we would be more than happy to have a business In our downtown. The city will even assist you. The opportunities here are unbelievable as a small town. I wish I were younger.
I bet Caledonia or Mt. Pleasant would love to have the business relocated to their municipalities...even with the colors.
that just makes me mad, way to encourage a business IN business.. idiots.... 'we can't bring in new businesses so let's pick on the ones here...'
I really don't see anything offensive with the paint job. It is bold and bright and stands out, but it is clean and fresh...something we can always use more of.
I guess, on the other hand, there are some sort of rules that are written that are simply being enforced. I guess those rules were written for a reason. It is a shame.
Maybe those zoning laws or whatever they cited need to be revisited? Most probably someone just didn't like the way it looked, or the clientele the business is targeting, and found whatever petty clause they could to try to get them out.
I like the colors, I think it adds some boldness and culture to the otherwise boring building. It is a shame that someone with a little power (or a grudge) against the business can order them to remove the colors. You go to any good sized city and go through the streets and see lots of culture and individualism to lots of the buildings. I always love going thru Chicago and the one brick building right off the expressway is always painted with a different theme.
Speaking of CITY GOVERNMENTS, and STATE for that matter. I see in the Baraboo news that the BREW PARTY they were going to have (with home brew) had to be changed to NO HOMEBREW. Seems a NAMED person complained that It was illegal. They are all very disappointed.
I don't know how they can concider that part of downtown! In that case all the houses on the same block would be concidered downtown and subject to painting codes or where they are saying they have.

Ser, thank you for linking me to this post. Anyone else notice the colors the city used to paint on the walk in front of the building? All these colors can be found around the city used by the city, just a little more hypocrisy. I havent been up that way in awhile so i ask, did they have to paint it?
Not yet, but they still have to change it. The store has changed ownership, so that has slowed things up.
Immediately to their north is a barbershop which is red, white, and blue. That's OK, though, because those are the "traditional" colors of a barbershop. In that case, I would argue that the traditional colors of head shops are vibrant, psychedelic colors. Take a look inside any one of them. It's like revisiting the 60's.
