Summerfest Begins Today

Are you going? I'm not.

  1. I've never been. I've been tempted several times due to the quality of music available.

Upon perusing the list of acts this year, I've noticed very few non-prime time acts whom I recognize that I would be tempted to fight a crowd to see. Has the quality of general admission acts diminished? Are we being forced to downsize at Summerfest too?

  2. If I get free tickets I may. Truck in my own water and sun block. Except for the scantily clad young ladies on hot summer days, Summerfest isn't something that gets me going.

Okay, everyone that partied on the Tramway in their youth, raise your hands.

  3. It's a dream come through for me. I LOVE to people watch and where better than Summerfest and the State fair.

  4. Money's tight this year. I'll still probably go on Friday to see Styx and Los Lonely Boys seeing they are on the side stages.

KK, you have asked a good question. I recently did a blog post on Odds and Sods on bands playing at fairs in Wisconsin. From what I've noticed acts like Styx, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, KISS, and Journey are playing at fairs and festivals and fairs for a cheap price. Most of these acts are past their prime and lost most of their original members. It's a shame being reduced to being just a nostalgic act, but it happens.

Then again, U2 is playing at Soldier Field on July 5. Tickets range from $33 to $1100 (There are a few left) Of course, that doesn't include parking and other fees. To me, that's pretty steep.

Last year, I paid $70 a piece for some decent tickets for Rush at the Marcus Amphitheater. For a three hour show, it was worth it.

  5. It used to be a good time..... the last few times we went it cost a fortune. Still good times..

Def Leppard & Heart is who I would go to see. Just might catch them in Minnesota! They are at the State Fair. oh well...... now that we are Minnesotans.. :-) gotta go where the fun times are!

  6. Music would be the only thing that could get me to go there.

    kk, never been? Gee.

I was last there over a decade ago. Too crowded for my taste.

Way back when it first started, you paid for entrance and they stamped your hand so you could come and go. One of us paid, got stamped, left, and returned to the car. My ex-wife is an artist. She copied the design onto the back of each of our hands with a Flair pen, then we smudged them. Perfect replicas. One friend was so pleased he went through the gate over and over. Good times.

  7. Yep, orbs, never been. I'm not much of a fair goer either. Something (musically) has to be pretty darn enticing to get me into that large a crowd. I remember a Steve Miller concert at Alpine Vally many years ago where my diminutive frame was crushed, almost trampled.. and certainly squeezed and smothered on the way out.

  8. Well that ties it. Orbs just ruined Summerfest for me. He reminded me about the crowds. I don't like those crowds especially in a chair. My hands grip the wheels, dirt and beer mud get on the wheels, I'm a mess two hours in and ready to go home.

  9. I've never been to summerfeast either...I just dislike crowds and long lines.Quite a change from many years ago. At home I can play whatever music I want.

  10. Drew, I was really tempted to go to chicago for Lollapalooza last year to see Radiohead in the evening and a couple of other acts during the day. The idea of the potential drunken (rowdy?) crowds and the fact that I probably wouldn't have gotten close enough to even really see them was enough to discourage me out of it. Besides, the ticket prices were rather steep for one day of entertainment.
