Before Dawn

It just came to my attention that the band Before Dawn is playing at McAuliffe's Pub in Racine this Saturday night (probably about the time my plane lands). I hope I get there in time to race from the airport to see them.

So why would I be so excited to see them? Well, they are pretty entertaining. I have their CD and they did a pretty good video of their song Proof. The male singer has a bit of Fred Schneider (of the B 52s) going on at times. But the real draw is Kate, one of my former students from when I taught in Florida.

Don't believe me? Well, here's Proof.

  1. Now that would be fun! It is worth another video:

I will be returning to Racine that evening as well. Do you know what time they are performing? Is there a cover charge? McAuliff's website needs some updating, for sure....

I see the B52 connection, but I also see and hear a remarkable style similarity of Brandon Flowers of The Killers.

  3. I don't know details of the show, but I sent her an email asking since it wasn't on McAuliffe's website. Will update when I find out.

  4. Interesting! Great guitar riffs...I could be persuaded into going to see them. There is a five dollar cover charge. McAuliff's website is in a dire need of updating. The only info I seen of the event is here

  6. I'm sure I will be home by then, but I might be rather sleepy after a full day of travel and partying.

Has anyone been to McAuliff's for their live music at night? What kind of crowd does it attract? (young/old-rowdy/safe) Can you find a place to sit? $5 isn't so bad if the music is good.

Been there, when they have a GOOD band, there is generally a lead band will open first, and then the mainliner starts normally around 11pm.

The crow is based on what type of music the bands plays and how popular they are; and if they have a good following, JJ will have the pool table taken out and put up more tables, but in the same turn if you don’t get there early enough you’ll be standing. It’s pretty safe, I have never saw a problem when a band is playing.

Cover charge ranges any where from the low of $5.00 to $15/$20, again based on how good they are and the following.

As a note...and this pisses me off...JJ will raise the price of every thing he sells when they have a good band in house. Then it’s a bitch to get a drink when the place is full!

  9. I've seen a few bands play out at McAuliffe's as well...The crowds vary with each show. The first I saw Cosmic Railroad out there, the crowd was thin... A year later I saw them again, this time the place was JAMMED PACKED! Couldn't even find a place to sit.

And yes, JJ does jack up the prices.

  10. Well since cover is only $5 for this one, hopefully the prices won't be jacked up too high.

I got a message back from her...she says yeah, 9:30 means more like 10!
