Holy CRAP! Food inflation is 20%

If it wasn't for the deflation of property, we'd be seeing inflation like the 70s. Yes I horde when I see a sale. After a month or two I go stock up again, and tonight my jaw hit the floor at the meat prices. Just nuts. I also found that WalMart isn't the low cost leader anymore.

I haven't been able to buy a decent piece of meat for awhile now. I just shake my head and leave. I've been looking for some country style pork ribs. A 2-3 pound package that used to cost about $4.00 is now three times that price. No fricking way! Those were always the cheap-o's (and the best)

My grocery bill has been ridiculous. I'm seriously eating more tuna. How are people making it?

I saw on Milwaukee's news that with the takeover of M&I Bank by BMO Harris, they are expecting to eliminate over 100 jobs through consolidation. (in simple terms, making those who work, do more than one job) People aren't working, costs are going up... we are in some serious trouble.

I also saw that in the intersections in Milwaukee, children are on the street, in traffic, selling cold bottled water and sodas. One girl said she put up with the heat to help out her family.... They were standing out all day in this heat, working. While it is good to see enterprise in our youth, it smacks of the fact that child labor has returned, folks.... and we find it acceptable.

Kenosha Fresh Market

Just about all produce
Meat
spices

Aldies

produce
store brand canned goods

Piggly Wiggly on sale.

depends on sale example-Banquet TV dinners .88 at Walmart, .70 at Pig.

Farm and Fleet

Sales/depends on item. I shop there out of loyalty.

KKD I also have been shocked at meat prices. Kenosha fresh market has much better prices, but you are using an old fashioned style meat dept. like grandma used. One problem is the "trendy" meats. Chicken wings that are mostly skin and bones are getting higher prices than thigh quarters.

Child labor? Dodging traffic and selling water isn't anymore verbotin than a lemonade stand. I used to bust my ass and get up at 5am to deliver the Sentinal. I worked farm fields. You want to talk about back breaking labor? Bent over, sifting onion sets in 90+ degree heat. We had a large yard with a lot of trees, and long gravel drive way. My jobs were to shovel that bastard drive in the winter, rake leaves, trim hedges, cut grass for our large yard and the Pastor next door, and change storms for screens and back. Dodging cars and making sales don't bring even an Alligator tear to my eye.

Food inflation! Let's talk about toilet paper inflation. The width of the roll has been decreased by 3/4 of an inch over the year. I have been using 5 more squares per swipe (or wipe....whatever).

Huck I agree with you. You have to go were the sales are.

I shop at Aldi's, Piggly and Pick n Save. That is were I find it a lot cheaper.

Last week I did all my shopping just at Piggly and Aldi's. The freezer and frig were empty and I spent two hundred dollars just to fill it up between the two stores. I get most of my meats at Piggly. The meat prices at Aldi's is crazy.

I agree the prices are really crazy these days. I don't know how they expect people to survive. My mom is on Social Security and she barely makes it from month to month.

I still think Wal Mart Is the best value, IF you know what your spending, and don't buy on impulse. You folks are fortunate you have a choice. Here In Mauston, we have 1 grocery store, The next closest Is 12 miles away, and Is kind of limited. The only people that can afford their REGULAR prices are the people from Illinois, and Minneapolis. They think their cheap. We have been reduced to eating lots of chicken (frozen bagged breasts) for sandwiches, as Campbell's soup meals, stir fry's, etc. Really the only other meat we eat Is ground beef, and sometimes some kind of pork product. It really sucks, but hopefully something good happens. I did hear BEEF should come down, because of the heat. Millions of cattle are being sold because of the high temperatures thus flooding the market? Of course this will probably be offset by gasoline prices?

Toad we get the frozen bag of chicken breasts. I have made my own breaded chicken chunks, put them on top of homemade dressing and I have made a lot of different things with chicken. Some stores have thin pork chops that are really cheap too. If you go to Wal-Mart go early and look at the meat that has been marked down that morning. I always have got a lot of good deals that was on roasts and other meat. I thought some ideas for you. I hope this helps you out.

Tender Heart Bear, Thank you for your thoughts. My wife and myself, are not really suffering, It's more a matter of trying to save a few bucks, because (somehow) every now and again, something happens, that requires spending on things you didn't plan on. As many older adults know, your children may leave the house, but that doesn't mean they won't cost you anything In the future. We are also kind of guilty of spending money on things we don't necessarily need, but can't resist. I have a whole house full of It. I guess my statement was more for ideas, like yours, but we do have way's to save. We just need to be creative. To end. Frozen Chicken Breasts can be used In so many way's it's amazing.

Huck, I worked as a kid too. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. As kids, we worked to help the family. We shoveled, dug sod, weeded, washed floors, walls, cleaned the basement, you name it.... I also babysat every weekend and some evenings for my own spending money when I was a preteen. I got an official job at 15 1/2, the earliest they allowed. I see the benefit. I also know the drawbacks... no potential for extra school involvement.

What I am talking about in Milwaukee are kids who are working to help buy food for their families, to pool together to buy gas for the auto, or pay the rent. These are "jobs" that have no regulation, no safety standards, no hour restrictions. It is far more than a lemonade stand in the driveway.

When I saw this on the news, they were saying how ingenious these young kids were. And I mean young. Some of them looked like they were 10 years old. Our perceptions are changing. And I don't think it is all for the good. Times are tougher than many know for a lot of people.

You folks should see an Amish Market some time. They sell all kinds of stuff. Particularly If you like to bake. They sell flour In 10# bags. As a matter of fact they sell ALL the grains, whole or ground. Spices in plastic tubs like you would get a quarter pound of stuff from a deli, dirt cheap. Bulk Gelatin for Jell-o, all kinds of stuff, It's really fun. They also have odd stuff, like Tar Soap for skin disorders, Ear wicks you stick In your ear, and light on fire. Lots of crazy stuff.
