"NAACP says Racine Police Department isn't doing enough to recruit minorities"

Bump - The plot thickens: "Another police lieutenant alleges discrimination by chief," http://www.journaltimes.com/news/local/article_e338f6e2-cde6-11e0-98c6-001cc4c03286.html

"Community groups are questioning the Racine Police Department's diversity, saying the department isn't doing enough to recruit minorities.

"Groups like the NAACP are upset the department is conducting a national search for a new police chief instead of looking at qualified minorities internally.

"'It is easy to throw stones and try and hurt the organization when in fact you haven't done your homework and really looked at the problem in an objective way,' outgoing Racine Police Chief Kurt Wahlen tells FOX6 News.

"Chief Wahlen says he wants people selected based on their proven abilities and not necessarily on what they are.

"Earlier this month, a black officer filed a discrimination lawsuit against the City of Racine, saying the chief passed him up on a promotion based on his skin color. The city's affirmative action committee sent a letter to Chief Wahlen pointing out dismal diversity statistics in the Racine Police Department.

"The NAACP believes the department is not reflecting the diversity of the community."

I don't know enough about this to take sides. The 75% failure rate that Wahlen refers to is depressing. Are those high school graduates? How difficult is the written test? Sometimes minorities claim that such tests are culturally biased.

I am so sick of these people playing the racist card!

NO ONE deserves a job if they are not qualified for the position no matter what color they are.

Back when I was 21, 22 I took a test for the police department. I was told face to face by a representative from the police department, “if I am not a Viet Nam Vet or black, I will not get a job no matter how high I test”! They, Viet Nam Vet or blacks, are being given first preference because the Federal government told cities they WILL hire vets and blacks first or lose their aid.

This is back when troops where being removed from Viet Nam and the blacks where crying discrimination about everything.

I was also told if I was a 'black woman vet', I would be an automatic shoe in for the job.

So they can kiss my ass! Get educated or quit bitching!

Ser I agree with you on the racist part. Because I was just told that the other day when I had to card a black man at work for liquor. He said I was carding him because of his skin color. I told him no I was not it was the town that is making us card everyone for liquor. That really mad me mad because I am not a racist person. I am tired of the blacks thinking everyone is against them. It is the blacks that are the racist people.

I read it in a paper not to long ago that the black kids are like two or three years behind in school. This I do not know if it is true in any way. But that is what I did read.

Whenever there is a dispute, there is usually two sides to the story.

1. I just received ACT test scores for the most recent testing. My copy included breakdown by race. There is a huge discrepancy between the (self-identified) Black, Hispanic and White score results. The blacks scored far below the white population that took the test. So far below, that colleges would require remedial classes before allowing entrance.

2. Ask any decent, hard working black person about discrimination. Have a real conversation with them and you will understand there is a huge racial bias they face. It is very hard for them to live day-to-day with the hate they face.

Unfortunately, much of this bias, in my opinion, comes from the large numbers of African-Americans (maybe due to cultural expectations, or lack of) who simply don't participate or work toward excellence through education. I really feel sorry for those who put effort forward and are still judged unfairly. There needs to be more compassion on all sides and guaranteed equal opportunity. And yes, there is bias and judging happening against white people too.

I remember the shock and outcry when Bill Cosby took a stand on this. The black population was very angry... but I think there is a lot of truth behind it and it needed to be said. Advancement and pride needs to begin within.

KK. YOU nailed It. EXCELENCE In Education. Those that DO work hard will succeed eventually, BUT not without MORE than their share of discrimination. I DO however disagree with programs that single out a particular race for hiring practices. IF racism exists In the Racine Police Dept. HR. dept. I can't imagine It would be too difficult to prove.

I wonder why the NAACP doesn't criticize All Saints for the racial composition of their doctors?

When I was going to college in Detroit, I went to the financial aids office to see what I could get. The lady that was helping me out bent over backwards to find something but she just couldn't. She told me "If you were black or a female there are all kinds of programs, but you being a white male over 30, there's absolutely nothing. It's not right. And I truly feel sorry for you." That came from a sincere black women. I then joked and asked her if I threw a brick through a bank window, could I get some kind of grant in prison? Dead set serious, she said yes.
