Please forgive my complete lack of techno savvy, but I have a question for those of you that aren't totally perplexed by this stuff.
I have a regular who has a 'Nook'. He LOVES it. He told me his son has a Kindle that he can't stand and is getting rid of it. The thought of having something other than my desktop computer sounds good, I am not an avid reader but reading on a contraption sounds amazing.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a laptop, then saw the Nook, then lots of commercials and wow, mass confusion on a direction to look.
I do not know much about IPads or Tablets, but they too, look interesting.
I need some ideas as to the best of all worlds for me. Kick butt speed and capacity would be really good. Something that is mobile and can do it all would definitely be wild. Being able to download books and read them on said object would be nice, any ideas guys? I know I'll need to start saving up for whatever I get, and really feel completely at a loss for what is out there, and can't fathom how they work.
To borrow a quote from the hubby -"I got married so I wouldn't have to do that". He's our tech guy but this is stuff beyond his 'data base' per say. So I ask you, my dear irregular family for input, thanks bunches :)

I know nada about that stuff. My grand kids know more.
Same here. My sister has a Kindle and loves it, but those are only good for downloading and reading books, I believe. She's an avid reader. I don't know about the pads or tablets or even about laptops. I'm a dinosaur with just a desktop PC. Sorry.
It is my understanding that the Kindle is a single use function, a reading device. You can download some classic books for free, but mostly there is a fee associated with popular books.
There are Kindle type apps that you can add or download to other items, like tablets, netbooks, or iTouch items that make them perform like a Kindle.
My best advice would be to go to a big box store, like best buy. Tell them what you want whatever device you purchase to do for you. Pick their brain, put your hands on these items, try them out and see if you like them. Then... do not buy. Go home, instead.
Look at the the items you think you want to purchase, online. See what people who own them have to say. Think it over. The sales people will probably try to sell you more than you really need.
The subject becomes more complex, as everyone tries to sell you stuff. I bought mini puter on sale and download books for free. It works fine.

Liz, I have a Nook Color. I was In the market for a Tablet, and after looking at all the REALLY EXPENSIVE tablets ie. I-Pad, Xoom, and on and on. What I wanted, was something that was capable of getting the web via Wi-Fi. After all was said and done, I decided on the NOOK. REASONS. It's color, It Is 8GB, and you can save ALL you want on your computer. The best part, was that Barnes and Noble Is ALWAYS available for help or problems. Darn difficult to get those people from China to answer. You can go to the store, look at the original book and download In seconds for a fraction of the cost of the hard copy. Also It sits on your home computer, as well as the Nook. I like cookbooks, and It does a great job. It also has lots of Apps availabe many of which are free. It's nifty to say the least.
I have an iPad (1st generation) and it is a great little device. Very versatile compared to the Kindle, but almost more expensive (although I got mine on clearance when the new one came out so it really wasn't that bad).
I have heard lots of great things about the Nook Color (which Toad endorses as well). The Nook only has 8GB of storage (which you will fill quicker than you think if you start playing with apps) but it is expandable via microSD cards. I have the 16GB iPad and I have to be aware of what I put on it...it is not expandable like the Nook.
Hale, Your right. I forgot about the expansion slot, because what I download generally goes into my computer also. I did put a 16gb micro card In It, but won't need It for awhile. I wanted the i-pad 1st gen, when they cut them In price, but they were gone instantly. I still like the back-up from Barnes & Noble. I think they have one In Racine. I have to go to Madison, or LaCrosse. It's 70 miles either way, but we go often enough anyway.
