My mom was the switchboard operator there. I worked in gift wrap in the basement with Martha Schaffer. Her husband was Royal Schaffer. I bought all my scouting uniforms there.
The thing I remember was the wooden floors upstairs. Reminds me of Nelsons in West Racine. Zahns was such a neat place. In fact now that you guys mention it, I got my scouting uniforms there as well.
Fun to see the pictures. I have very limited memories of that store. I bought a long skirt for my sister's wedding form there when I was a teenager. I think JC Penny's took over the scouting stuff when they closed?
Beautiful. I bought clothes there in high school because I had a part time job that paid by depositing into a checking account. I was 16 in the 60's and no boy had a checking account. Zahns, though, accepted my checks.
great photos ser! thanks for sharing. my mom made me take the bus there (when we first moved to racine in '64) to get my first girl scout handbook & it was dark out & terrifying... missed my stop but zahns was a warm & friendly beacon & i was so proud that i made it there & back.
wow.. very cool pictures! Too bad it ended up vacant. I think that was the only place to get Scout things ( Boy & Girl) for the longest time?? I am thinking they had the 'contract' or whatever for Scouts.
