Smudge Pots

Do you know what a “smudge pot is?”

Take a large juice can and punch some holes in around the “side” bottom of the can; the old style “Church Key” works great. Then make a handle out of a coat hanger.

Now take a bunch of leaves out of the gutter and fill the can; light the leaves of fire through one of the holes in the side and begin to swing the can around and around,

The leaves will start to burn and smoke heavily, stop and fill the can again. Just keep up these steps until the whole street is filled with smoke.

But be advised, someone will call the cops on you!  But it’s well worth it as long as you can run and hide.

We made something like this with a 3 lb. coffee can in Girl Scouts, but turned it upside down. It was a campsite grill. (also known as a hobo grill, a name that is now too un-PC) We built a fire under the can and cooked burgers on the top.

Be careful, not too many cans are metal anymore. Most are foil covered cardboard.

That's good to know, SER, but I'll stick with Sterno.

P.S. I bet that no one under 40 knows what a church key is.

"church key"
The key that opens the spirits to the world, like Pandora's box

I know what a church key is.. My parents had one hanging on the underside of their kitchen cabinets for hundreds of years.. (well ok that might be an exaggeration) until last year when it was lost.. it feels like a piece of the house is gone..
