"MADISON
(AP) — The state Assembly has passed bill to limit the types of
food that food stamp users could buy, including how much of their
allotment can be spent on junk food.
"The Assembly passed the Republican-sponsored measure on a 60-35 vote Wednesday.
"The bill would require food stamp recipients to use at least
two-thirds of their monthly benefits to purchase nutritional foods such
as beef, chicken and produce.
"Republican supporters say they want to prevent people on
taxpayer-funded public assistance from spending their money on junk
food.
"'A lot of people, an awful lot of people who are on FoodShare are
also on BadgerCare, so there is a direct financial benefit not just to
the individual, which of course is obvious to have better health, but
also to state taxpayers and society as a whole,' Rep. Robin Vos
(R-Rochester) said.
"Users would also be barred from buying crab, lobster, shrimp and other shellfish.
"The change would require a federal waiver, which no state has ever received.
"The Assembly passed a similar bill last session but it never got a vote in the Senate."

Why can't we just take all the poor people, line them up against a wall, and shoot them? That would end so many social problems.

I highly doubt that an abundance of people have been buying shrimp, lobster and crab! WTH?
There will always be a faction who cheat the system. This is yet another attack, under misconception, of those who rely on these services to survive. We have become a greedy, me only nation.
I see that Russ Feingold announced that he will be running for senate. We need to be informed on the policies of those running for office, we need to pay attention to those who will support what we believe is best process... and then get our butts out and VOTE. There are two divided trains of thought out there. This is a crucial time in how our country will be run. The apathy has to end.
For a party that wants less government, they sure like to make more rules for everyone. I wonder how many of these legislators have ever gotten behind a welfare recipient in the grocery checkout line. Probably not. I have and most times people aren't buying junk food, they are buying necessities.
I also noticed the drug testing part. That worked so well in Florida. NOT.
I wholeheartedly agree with KK. GET OUT THE VOTE!
And let's not forget the famous "White Escalade!" If one more person tells me that story, I may become violent.
So far, drug testing has just wasted tax dollars...who should have been tested? A freshman congressman from FL who backed testing folks on assistance!
This really humors me, although I don't believe food stamps should be used for Lobster, Crab, Shrimp, although Shrimp Is cheaper than Beef, or Pork. Anyhow I'm humored by VOS, because he and his GOP allies spend MY tax dollars any way they wish, and this includes our Governor, that Is campaigning for President, but won't admit It, so he can spend OUR tax dollars. I could go on, and on, but I just get more, and more pissed off talking about It.
Beejay, I didn't hear about the "White Escalade"?
KK, Good thoughts, but Generation X isn't interested In what we think. I just heard two day's ago, those between 18 and 34 (I think) want the job they find to "Have a GOOD SOCIAL environment" That Is a big priority for them.
Why don't we wipe the butts of the poor and dress them?
Here's an idea: every citizen has to take a poor person into their household.
whether it be republicans or democrats, they need to work together to solve real problems. Stopping someone from purchasing some crab legs is a waste of time. there is no way they can track and prove how much money was saved by this bill. Beside, food stamp users are still going to spend their allotted amount of money so there is no savings.
government wants everyone to be healthier and eat beef and chicken, then find a way to lower the price of beef. actually everything, it's all out of control
Way back, when I was a cashier, the food stamp misuse was rampant. People would buy expensive cuts of meat and lobster with their stamps. Usually, it was for resale purposes, not for their own consumption. I don't know how much of this is still going on.
This proposed level of limiting the kinds of things they can buy will be a nightmare for stores. I remember digging through bags to delete popcorn, and a few other odd items not allowed with the stamps because the shopper didn't realize they weren't allowed, and didn't have cash to purchase them. It often got ugly.
The government doesn't dictate what the poor eat, so let them choose whatever diet fills their needs. Bartering is part of fulfilling their needs.
It's tough being poor, so a little helping hand helps everybody out.
Caviar anyone?
