The Second Coming
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

"The Racine Common Council on Tuesday gave approval for Slide the City, a 1,000-foot-long 'slip-and-slide', to set up near North Beach on Saturday, Aug. 8.
"Slide the City will use Hoffert Drive from Michigan Boulevard to North Beach Park. Participants will pay to ride their inner tubes down the hill in a family-friendly water party. Single-day attendance is capped at 5,000.
"Real Racine, the county’s destination marketing organization, is bringing the attraction to the community. Real Racine is paying for the water and park rental fees.

"Teacher suspended after jamming students' phones"

"The man is a damn hero, yet a Florida science teacher is in some hot water over his decision to not take crap from his students anymore.
"Dean Liptak, who teaches at Fivay High School in Hudson, Florida was sick and tired of student’s cell phones ringing, beeping and interrupting his class. So he did what anyone who has had to sit behind teenagers at a movie theater wishes they had thought of. He bought a cell phone jammer… and those little bastards’ phones stopped buzzing.
"A spokesperson from the Pasco County School District, Linda Cobbe told local reporters: 'Verizon had come to the school saying someone had a jamming device, because the cell phone service was being interrupted in the area.'
"Mr. Lipta is going to get some silence for at least one week of school as he has been reprimanded and given a five day suspension without pay over the incident. While cell phone jammers are not illegal, they can be if there are harmful consequences in their use; such as stopping service in the nearby neighborhood. Hopefully these kids learned some kind of lesson from all of this. I know one science teacher that would have made these kids show some respect."

This week on Break we saw a motorcyclist tell a driver to stop texting
in the car only to get run over by that driver in retaliation.

How are you? Are you enjoying
your ride on the weather rollercoaster?
My God, it’s changeable these days.
One day I wear shorts, the next day I’m donning my winter coat. One friend told me that this seems more like
fall than spring to him. To me, June
means summer. This June means forties
for the temperatures. Another friend
says that he remembers 4th of Julys so cold that the parade-goers
wore long pants and jackets. Deep down
inside of me is a ball of fear that we’ve messed up the climate
permanently. Our existence is entirely
dependent upon the climate. Dying
honeybees and major swings in the climate scare me. They scare me for Junior’s future. They scare me for everybody’s future.
This is the first year I’m considering letting Junior go out
for “real” football at school. He’s
played his share of flag football and I hope he’s ready for the discipline of
the real thing. They’ve already started
practicing. He comes home from practices
exhausted. He’s earned his share of
bruises. As long as no arteries are
severed or bones broken, I’m going to try not to worry too much. (Sigh, as if any mother can stop worrying
about her children.)

I love the beauty of spring, but loathe
the temperatures, snow, and ice of winter.
While we’re on the subject, I’m going to make a plug for the Chicago
Botanic Garden (which isn’t even in
Cook County):
http://www.chicagobotanic.org/. I’ve been there numerous times, at different
times of the year, and the beauty is breathaking. If you plan on visiting and eating, I suggest
that you pack your own lunch. The food
in the cafeteria is great, but the prices are astronomical. I realize it’s for the Garden, but I won’t
(can’t) pay their prices.
The gossip on the proposed raise for City Administrator Tom Freidel
is nasty. Mr. Freidel says he doesn’t
know if he’d stay if there is no raise.
So offer him nothing more. If he
stays, he stays. That saves the city
$30K per annum. If he resigns, so what? Then it might be a good time to re-examine
the position. If it’s decided that we
still need an administrator, offer the position for $100,000 a year, a city
car. full benefits and perks. I betcha
Human Resources would be swamped with responses. Then again, if Racine’s
reputation proceeds us, maybe not.
The argument that that’s what other cities pay is
weak. As my mother would say, “If those other
cities jumped off a cliff, would you jump, too?” Every city mentioned is doing better than Racine. See, Mr. Mayor Dicker, results should get
rewards. So soon after screwing city
employees, Mr. Mayor has the nerve to suggest a major raise for his cousin. There’s no doubting his chutzpah. Mr. Mayor takes care of business, running for
governor after Mr. Walker wins the presidency.
And “Machinery Row” is his gift to Racine,
his legacy, if you will. If you won’t,
he might end up wearing jail orange.

It has been a very long month for us since last month was migration for the birds. It is very slow for the wildflowers with the temperatures going up and down. With that happening the flowers will not be coming up right away. I just hope that it will warm up so I can get more pictures to share with everyone. "Why We’re Hosting A Forum On Bullying"

"The Racine County Eye is hosting a forum on bullying from 6 to 8 p.m. June 3 at the Bray Center, 924 Center Street.
"We’d love for you to be there because we know how important children are in this community. And for us, the issue of bullying has become too important to ignore.
"After 15-year-old Caledonia resident Cameron Langrell committed suicide in April after he was bullied when he came out as transgender, Heather Asiyanbi and I started talking about how the community reacted and what we can do to help people have better discussions about this issue. We noticed the need for information: How bullying is addressed in the community, what resources are available, and what to do if your child is being bullied or is the bully.
"We noticed that parents often feel almost as isolated as their children do when their children are being bullied and we’d like to help change that. This is a forum on bullying of all forms, not just kids that are transgender."

Good, good, good. I wish this type of awareness was around when I was in school. I vote for branding bullies with a "B" on their foreheads. To this day, when I see a video where a bully gets beat up, I admit to feeling a visceral joy.
