If You Smoke Pot, Your Anesthesiologist Needs To Know

DENVER — When Colorado legalized marijuana, it became a pioneer in creating new policies to deal with the drug.

Now the state’s surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists are becoming pioneers of a different sort in understanding what weed may do to patients who go under the knife.

Their observations and initial research show that marijuana use may affect patients’ responses to anesthesia on the operating table — and, depending on the patient’s history of using the drug, either help or hinder their symptoms afterward in the recovery room.

Colorado makes for an interesting laboratory. Since the state legalized marijuana for medicine in 2000 and allowed for its recreational sale in 2014, more Coloradans are using it — and they may also be more willing to tell their doctors about it.

Roughly 17% of Coloradans said they used marijuana in the previous 30 days in 2017, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than double the 8% who reported doing so in 2006. By comparison, just 9% of U.S. residents said they used marijuana in 201
7.
“It has been destigmatized here in Colorado,” said Dr. Andrew Monte, an associate professor of emergency medicine and medical toxicology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and UCHealth. “We’re ahead of the game in terms of our ability to talk to patients about it. We’re also ahead of the game in identifying complications associated with use.”

Dear Madame Zoltar

Hello, my dears.  How are you?  I suppose you want to know where I've been for the past few weeks.  Would you believe that I was abducted by extraterrestrials?  Well, that's what happened.  They were the grays and they come from the Alpha Centuri galaxy.  Their home planet, Mora, is remarkably similar to Earth.  It's cooler there and they have more water.  I assume the atmosphere is similar to Earth's as I had no trouble breathing.  The same with gravity.  In any case, Morans abducted me because they wanted to learn about my "powers."  They snuck into our bedroom and paralyzed me.  I was conscious, but couldn't move.  They explained to me what their intentions were and I had little choice but to agree to their terms.

The ET's were very interested in astral projection.  None of them seemed to be able to do it, and that bothered them.  They would ask me the same questions over and over.   I tried to explain meditation to them, but they just couldn't get it.  So I decided that I would demonstrate the process to them. I started meditating and pretty soon I was in a place to astral project.  So I did.  I didn't want to project to somewhere on Earth because I didn't know if I could project such a great distance.  I decided to project to just outside the building.  Big mistake.  As I approached the outside in my projection, I heard a booming voice which said, "Thou shall not violate any more of our laws," and I was thrown back into my body where I landed with a thud, injuring my neck and shoulder.

I was on Mora for a month and I took off a week to help my neck and shoulder heal.  The ET's have no magic solution to pain and sickness.  They are like us in that regard.  They get sick and they can hurt themselves and others, and be hurt by others.  However, they are immune to most Earth illnesses thanks to vaccinations.  They performed medical tests on me, but there was no violating of my body.  At least, I don't remember any.

I gave the Morans a lot of my secrets.  I figured that I could cooperate and be left unmolested, or I could fight and lose every time.  Obviously, the Morans are advanced over us in the area of technology.  I would also hope that they are advanced in personality, discipline, and emotions.  They should be able to handle my secrets.  Time will tell.

Reading The Journal Times, I see that the usual craziness continues in Racine.  At least no young black male has been killed by RPD lately.  They're still stalling on the Tyrese West report.  I would hate to be a cop.  They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.  Thank God that some people are more inclined to join the force.

Oh, heck.  I'm cutting off this blog.  Ever since being returned to Earth by the Morans, I often feel light-headed and weak.  Damn ET's!  If I don't start feeling better soon, they'll get the dreaded Zoltar Curse.

Thank you so much for reading my blog.  It's a pleasure to serve.  I always appreciate more readers.

Survey: 13% of Americans underestimate dangers of driving while high

From The Journal Times.com:

A recently published nationwide survey supports what local law enforcement leaders have been saying for months: The public often underestimates the dangers of driving while high.

Of the 2,582 drivers surveyed by the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 2018, 13.5% of American drivers said they felt that driving within an hour of using marijuana was only “slightly dangerous” or “not dangerous at all.”

In comparison, only 1.2% of those surveyed said that driving while over the legal limit for alcohol consumption was “slightly dangerous” or “not dangerous at all.”

“A lot of people don’t realize the amount that it (marijuana) impairs them,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA Wisconsin. “There’s this misperception that marijuana is not as dangerous or impairing (as alcohol). … Knowing the amount the public believes that misperception is important.”

Journal Times editorial: Other needs more urgent than Downtown redesign

This drawing by Toole Design Group shows how Downtown Main Street could look in a few years with two central driving lanes, a lane of trees and parking on each side, a dedicated bike lane on each side and no curbs.
A new design for Downtown Racine streets and Monument Square was released this month by Toole Design Group to show an image of what Racine’s Main Street area could look like in the future.

Those designs were featured in the Sunday paper last week.

It includes no more one-way streets, bike paths along Main Street, and parallel parking on Monument Square instead of angle parking.

For Monument Square, the group provided a design that made the square flush with the street as well as expanded sidewalk space by businesses to leave room for possible outdoor dining.
