Tearman Spencer Statement on $1.67 Million Payout for Police Stop
Jury awards victim due to excessive force, false arrest
MILWAUKEE – Tearman Spencer,
candidate for Milwaukee City Attorney, today issued the following
statement following a verdict awarding a victim of excessive force more
than $1.67 million:
“For nearly four decades we have had the same leadership in the City Attorney’s Office. Our City Attorney, Grant Langley, says he’s “competent” and the city needs to re-elect him. However, we’ve seen yet again his failure at doing his job, being proactive, and being a part of our communities.
“When a jury awards a victim more than $1.67 million due to police misconduct, we can look at the behavior of those involved and rightfully so. But a more serious issue is the lack of action taken by the City Attorney. This is another case of multi-million dollar payouts because the City Attorney is ineffective and waits for cases to reach a jury.
“This is another case of millions of taxpayer dollars being doled out on Grant Langley’s watch. It’s time for a new chapter in City Hall, and it starts with a new City Attorney. We must put an end to the status quo and usher in a new era of transparency, accountability, and being proactive so we can begin to build the city we deserve. Change must come.
“Change is inevitable and change can’t wait.”
