As the president and governors on both coasts argue over who has authority to end COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, scientists warned Tuesday that "prolonged or intermittent social distancing may be necessary into 2022."
Until researchers find an effective vaccine, social distancing may be necessary to avoid overwhelming the nation's hospitals, researchers wrote in the journal Science.
"Even in the event of apparent elimination," the authors added, "(virus) surveillance should be maintained since a resurgence in contagion could be possible as late as 2024."
