Photos of Black shooting victims hanging from nooses found in Riverside Park

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating why photos of Black people who were killed by law enforcement or private citizens were found hanging by nooses in Milwaukee’s Riverside Park.
The photos, which were discovered Saturday near North Oakland Avenue, were laminated and contained information describing the incident that led to each person’s death, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The Original Black Panthers of Milwaukee posted videos and photos of the group cutting down the nooses on Facebook, calling the display a “racist and disrespectful act to the memories” of those depicted: Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Botham Jean, Ahmaud Arbery, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin.
At 8 p.m. Monday, the group asserted on Facebook that no law enforcement agency was looking into the matter. One hour later, the sheriff’s office issued its news release saying it “immediately” opened an investigation after learning of the nooses on Saturday.
The investigation is ongoing and the office encourages anyone with information to contact Milwaukee County Dispatch at (414) 278-4788.
