The Oscar winner was lauded for his appearance in a remote episode of "Saturday Night Live" on April 25 portraying Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, whose presence has provided a steadying force to many Americans during the pandemic.

Then he began to decode mixed messages coming from the White House, from rumors that President Trump planned to fire him to a stunned look at the suggestion one could inject oneself with disinfectant.
