MADISON - Dane County public health officials are requiring all residents to wear face masks indoors unless they're at home — the first order in Wisconsin mandating the protective gear against the coronavirus.
Under the order issued Tuesday, anyone age 5 and older must wear a face mask when in any enclosed building, including workplaces and stores. Restaurants are exempt under the order.
"Given the current number of COVID-19 infections in our county, we need to all be wearing face coverings every time we leave the house,” Janel Heinrich, director of Public Health Madison & Dane County, said in a statement.
Heinrich's order comes as cases in Dane County are surging, particularly among people in their 20s. Local health officials last week rolled back a plan to gradually reopen businesses, bars and restaurants in an effort to curb the spread of the virus in the county.
The order applies to health care settings, waiting in line and on public buses. Dane County residents also must wear face masks in other people's private homes, under the order.
