Jasmine C. Daniels, 22, has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the shooting death of her 2-year-old daughter last week, according to charges filed Sunday by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office.
Zymeiia Stevens was fatally shot Tuesday night in the 6600 block of North 105th Street.
A criminal complaint alleges that Daniels gave conflicting statements to investigators but later acknowledged she "accidentally did it" while "playing around with her gun in the basement when the gun went off and shot" the child.
An autopsy revealed the child suffered four gunshot wounds caused by a single bullet, the complaint states. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner has ruled the death a homicide.
Daniels is scheduled to make an initial appearance in court on Aug. 2. A check of Wisconsin online court records does not turn up any record of a prior criminal history.
Emergency crews responded to the home about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Paramedics worked to save Zymeiia’s life under challenging circumstances, Assistant Fire Chief Aaron Lipski told the Journal Sentinel.
An agitated crowd gathered outside the home as news of the shooting of a child spread, Lipski said. Fire crews arrived on scene about four minutes after receiving the call.
Surrounded by distressed people, paramedics had to move Zymeiia into an ambulance to try to resuscitate her. But then people began “banging and pounding” on the ambulance doors and trying to get in, Lipski said.
The crew decided to drive to a nearby fire station with Zymeiia inside to continue lifesaving efforts away from the crowd, Lipski said.
“I’m proud of the actions of my firefighters and paramedics,” Lipski said. “And this poor young girl and her family should know that every chance was given. And unfortunately, we just were not able to succeed in resuscitating.”
