A driver is lucky to be alive after his truck careened off an exit ramp bridge in the Zoo Interchange and plunged about 70 feet, landing in the lanes of Interstate 94.

It happened around 9:49 a.m. Saturday, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, which responded to a one-vehicle, personal injury crash on westbound I-94 just east of Interstate 41 in the Zoo Interchange in Milwaukee.

A Wisconsin Department of Transportation camera recorded the accident. The video shows a red pickup truck crashing into the side of a ramp and toppling over it, falling 70 feet to the road below as cars pass by. It appeared to land backwards, on its wheels.

When deputies arrived, they found the pickup upright in the right distress lane of the westbound I-94 lanes, the sheriff's office said. Two citizens were on the scene providing aid to the lone occupant. The driver was conscious and breathing and did not show signs of impairment.

A preliminary investigation by the sheriff's office indicated the male driver was driving on the ramp from westbound I-94 to southbound I-41 when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled up a snowbank, proceeded over the barrier wall, and fell down onto the westbound I-94 distress lane.

The Milwaukee Fire Department transported the driver to a local hospital.

No other information about the driver or his condition is immediately available.
