Catalytic converter thieves target Racine auto shop; one local garage has a solution
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Thieves struck a Racine garage, stealing thousands in catalytic converters and other automotive parts.
Catalytic converter thefts continue to surge across the country because the small amount of precious metals they contain is worth more than gold.
A Bay View garage has come up with a cheap fix.
The converters are held in place with exhaust pipe, which is easy to cut through. So the garage welds rebar on the pipe to deter would-be thieves.
"Trying to come up with an affordable option for anybody and everybody who thinks they're at risk," said Family Mechanic Owner Elijah Corona.
He came up with the solution after seeing how easy the thieves had it.
"Brand new pipe, cuts right through," said Corona, demonstrating in a video he posted to the business' Facebook page.
He cut through the pipe in three seconds. Then he shows attempting to cut through rebar.
After nearly 30 seconds, the rebar is only half cut. His businesses will weld rebar to an exhaust for a fraction of the cost of replacing a stolen catalytic converter.
"We have all the tools to heat them and shape them, add them to the automotive exhaust system," said Corona.
The owner of Good Wheel Automotive Services in Racine said thieves sold thousands of dollars in catalytic converters from his lot last week, as assorted car parts.
Security video showed an SUV backing in, and then as many as three people grabbing parts from a storage shed and loading them in the back of the vehicle.
Racine police are asking for help identifying the suspects.
In this case, the thieves stole parts Good Wheel had already removed from cars it had worked on.
But because demand is so high, mechanics like Corona are struggling to find replacements to fix cars that have had their converters stolen.
"Because of the high theft count, we're running into shortages of supplies to put these vehicles back together," said Corona.
He said replacing a stolen catalytic converter will cost on average around $1,000.
He charges $75 plus tax to install the rebar.

Cardinal Capital to build multi-family housing, commercial development on former Porter’s site
Cardinal Capital Management, of West Allis, has several other development projects they partnered with the City on, including the former Ajax property. In that project, they have completed the first of two multi-family housing buildings.
The development firm submitted the Porter’s project proposal Friday to the Department of City Development.
Plans include building 141 market-rate apartments, a sub-surface parking level with 209 parking units, and two retail spaces totaling 18,000 square feet. The residential portion of the plan features balconies with lake views, a first-floor lounge, a green roof terrace and dog walking space, and an electric charging station for electric vehicles.
“Cardinal Capital is excited to partner with the City of Racine on the redevelopment of the Porters site,” said Erich Schwenker, president of Cardinal Capital. “We are working closely with Mayor Mason and his team to ensure we complement the City’s plan for sustainability and quality housing. Unhappy Aaron Rodgers says he wants to leave Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY - After a year of attempts to mend the bridge, conflict is brewing between the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers before Thursday night's opening round of the NFL draft.
Rodgers is so disgruntled with the Packers that he has told some within the organization he does not want to return to the team, PackersNews confirmed. Rodgers’ desire to not return was first reported Thursday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The team has done nothing to placate Rodgers since the season's end, including converting no guaranteed money onto the remainder of his three-year contract. The three-time MVP quarterback said following the NFC championship game he had an "uncertain" future with the team. Publicly, the Packers have stated their commitment to Rodgers remaining their quarterback for the "foreseeable future," an indefinite timeline general manager Brian Gutekunst reiterated this week.

Drug bust uncovers 46 pounds of marijuana, weapons in Racine
RACINE, Wis. - After serving a search warrant Monday, April 26, court documents state the Racine Police Department's Special Investigations Unit seized a laundry list of items in line with the suspected drug-dealing operation.
Prosecutors say Zamarc Williams, 32, and Shannon Hollimon, 25, were running a drug trafficking ring out of their apartment near Biscayne Avenue and Princess Place.
Inside closets and kitchen drawers, Racine police found more than 46 pounds of marijuana, distribution equipment and nearly $83,000.
Officers found four guns, including a shotgun, semiautomatic rifle and ammunition. Inside the toy box in a child's bedroom, they found a fully-loaded black rifle BB gun, resembling an assault-type rifle.
Charging documents state the couple lived with their 16-month-old child and Williams' 6-year-old stayed with them part-time.
Also uncovered were 136 Oxycodone pills in a bathroom cabinet.
Williams and Hollimon now both face five total charges, including possession with intent to deliver more than 10,000 grams of THC with use of a dangerous weapon, maintaining a drug trafficking place and two counts of neglecting a child.
The two made their initial court appearances Tuesday, April 27, and are scheduled to return on May 6 for a preliminary hearing. They were instructed not to have contact with each other or the children.

MADISON - Attorney General Josh Kaul on Tuesday announced an investigation into clergy sexual abuse across Wisconsin, saying the review will help survivors heal and provide greater accountability for perpetrators.
The probe, which USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin first reported Thursday, will be led by the state Department of Justice and focus on abuse allegations against Catholic clergy and other faith leaders — many of which date back decades and involve religious officials who are now dead.
Wisconsin is home to five dioceses, including the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and religious orders such as the Norbertines in De Pere.
"I would like to say to survivors of clergy and faith leader abuse: We hear you. We know how important this is," Kaul said at a news conference outside the state Capitol in Madison.

“A Bunch of People Will Die” Going to Mars, Elon Musk Says
There’s been a lot of talk about how SpaceX will be sending the first manned mission to Mars by 2025, or 2026 at the latest, and how this would pave the way to colonizing the planet. Humanity needs to become a multi-planetary species, CEO Elon Musk believes, but it will come at a cost.
Or, as Musk himself says in a recent chat with Peter Diamandis, founder of the X Prize Foundation, “a bunch of people will probably die in the beginning.” The chat took place on April 22, which was Earth Day, and focused mostly on what man needs to do to cut down on carbon emissions before it’s too late. Musk took part in it because of his vested interest in the topic, and he discussed the Mars missions only in reference to how rockets have very high carbon footprints.

Never the one to beat around the bush, Musk admits right from the start that sending a manned mission to the Red Planet is inherently dangerous. “Going to Mars reads like that advert for Shackleton going to the Antarctic,” he says. “You know it is dangerous. It’s uncomfortable, and it’s a long journey. You might not come back alive, but it is a glorious adventure and it will be an amazing experience... Yeah, honestly, a bunch of people will probably die in the beginning.”
Still, it will be a “glorious adventure.” He says everyone involved understands that, adding that millions are willing to do it and that SpaceX is not “forcing anyone.”
Internet Outage in Canada Blamed on Beavers Gnawing Through Fiber Cables

Rascally beavers took down internet service for about 900 customers in a remote Canadian community this weekend after gnawing through crucial fiber cables, the Candian Broadcasting Corporation reported Sunday. The outage, which has since been resolved, also affected 60 cable TV customers and disrupted local cell phone service, according to a statement from the area’s provider, Telus.
Tumbler Ridge, a tiny municipality in northeastern British Columbia with a population of about 2,000 people, lost service for roughly 36 hours in what Telus described as a “uniquely Canadian disruption!”
“Beavers have chewed through our fibre cable at multiple points, causing extensive damage,” said Telus spokesperson Liz Sauvé in an email to Gizmodo. “Our team located a nearby dam, and it appears the beavers dug underground alongside the creek to reach our cable, which is buried about three feet underground and protected by a 4.5-inch thick conduit. The beavers first chewed through the conduit before chewing through the cable in multiple locations.”
After going down early Saturday morning, service was restored just before 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sauvé confirmed. In its statement, the company said crews worked “around the clock” to address the issue and determine how far the damage continued up the cable line. Telus brought in additional equipment and technicians to tackle “challenging conditions” due to the fact that the ground above the cable is partially frozen this time of year.
The beavers seem to have been scouting for materials to build their home. A photo taken of the site shows that they used fiber marking tape, usually buried several feet underground, as part of their dam, CBC reports.
Telus said it was “very sorry for this interruption,” but also appeared to recognize the humor in such a bizarre situation. Speaking to the CBC, Sauvé called the fiasco “a very unusual and uniquely Canadian turn of events.”

Alaska Airlines bans state senator for 'continued refusal' to follow mask rules

JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska Airlines has banned an Alaska state senator for refusing to follow mask requirements.
“We have notified Senator Lora Reinbold that she is not permitted to fly with us for her continued refusal to comply with employee instruction regarding the current mask policy,” spokesman Tim Thompson told the Anchorage Daily News on Saturday, adding that the suspension was effective immediately.
Reinbold, a Republican of Eagle River, said she had not been notified of a ban and that she hoped to be on an Alaska Airlines flight in the near future.
Last week, Reinbold was recorded in Juneau International Airport arguing with Alaska Airlines staff about mask policies. A video posted to social media appears to show airline staff telling Reinbold her mask must cover her nose and mouth.
Reinbold told the newspaper that had been inquiring about a “mask exemption with uptight employees at the counter."

SpaceX craft had close call with UFO after launching into orbit

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Endeavor spacecraft had a close call with an unidentified object before successfully reaching the International Space Station, a report said.
US Space Command warned the crew aboard the spacecraft of a possible collision with an unknown object after launching into orbit on Friday, Futurism reported.
“The possibility of the conjunction came so close to the closest approach time that there wasn’t time to compute and execute a debris avoidance maneuver with confidence, so the SpaceX team elected to have the crew don their pressure suits out of an abundance of caution,” NASA spokesperson Kelly Humphries told Futurism.
At its closest point, the object passed about 28 miles away from the spacecraft, the report said.
Ultimately, “there was no real danger to the crew or the spacecraft,” Humphries told the outlet.
Crew Dragon Endeavour made it to the International Space Station on Saturday.
