U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson poised to announce run for a third term as early as next week, according to sources
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson appears poised to announce as early as next week that he's running for reelection, according to two highly placed Republican sources.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has learned that in recent weeks Johnson reached out to potential staffers and advisers in preparation for the campaign.
High on Johnson's to-do list: hiring a campaign manager and a general consultant.
Johnson has drawn out his decision-making for months even as a large field of Democrats assembled to take him on in the midterms. By running, the Oshkosh Republican will be breaking a past campaign pledge to serve only two terms.
"I'm not ready to say anything," Johnson told CNN, which reported that Republicans were bullish about prospects that he would run again.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A top Republican lawmaker in the presidential battleground state of Wisconsin says there is “zero chance” the GOP-controlled Legislature will take over awarding the state’s 10 presidential elector votes in 2024, even as Democrats worry that is their goal.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that he also opposes dissolving the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission, which oversees elections, or making wholesale changes to how it operates.
There’s been an intense focus on Wisconsin and its election laws since President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump by nearly 21,000 votes last year.
Racine extends COVID testing at Festival Hall through January

RACINE — Racine has said that the National Guard COVID testing facility at Festival Hall will remain open through January.
The testing facility is located at 5 5th St. Room 4 in Racine. It will only be open on Monday's and Thursday's from noon to 6 p.m. The testing site will be closed on the 17th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“As anticipated with the end of the holiday season, COVID-19 cases are at the highest case rate that has been seen throughout the entirety of the pandemic at over 1,600 confirmed cases per 100,000 people," Dottie-Kay Bowersox, the Public Health Administrator for the City of Racine, said.

Texas restaurant refuses to apologize for 'misogynistic' Pelosi, 'Let's go Brandon' signs: Never 'busier'
The owner of a restaurant in Houston says the establishment won’t back down to "cancel culture renegades" after receiving backlash for posting signs mocking President Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
"We are heading into Crawfish season and then peak patio weather and won’t be slowed down from the cancel culture renegades," the co-owner of Preslee’s Southern-style restaurant in Houston Heights told Fox Digital on Wednesday. "It's about pro freedom and our right to run our small business."
The restaurant has faced backlash in recent days after photos were posted to social media showing Preslee’s sign mocking Biden and Pelosi. The restaurant’s marquee sign has long been used to post memes, jokes and "funny quotes," according to the owner, who requested his name not be used while speaking to Fox Digital.
"No mask needed," one sign at Preslee's read. "Unless you look like Nancy Pelosi."
The sign was updated this month to also include "Let’s Go Brandon!" at the bottom of its jab at Pelosi, photos show.

People slammed them as misogynistic on social media, and others left voicemails for the owners saying they "hope their business loses all their employees" and they go bankrupt, the owner said.
"The backlash we received at first was a little overwhelming while dealing with a busy restaurant. Lots of voicemails and private messages," he said.
The owner added that most of the negative reviews are coming from people who had never dined at Preslee’s "but feel the need to jump on the bandwagon." The restaurant’s Instagram page was even banned on Wednesday with no reason given, according to the owner. Fox Digital reached out to Instagram on the matter.
But "in the last few days, we’ve received overwhelming support from local and also other cities."
"We have never been busier!" he said in comment addressing people who "slandered" the establishment.
Preslee’s opened in 2019 and weathered the coronavirus and subsequent shutdowns without laying "a single employee off." The owner pointed to the Biden administration and mandates surrounding the pandemic for posting the two signs.
"I think it's pretty safe to say our current government has failed us and other small business owners. More than 150,000 small businesses have shut down from mandates, but this is not about politics. It's about basic rights that some have seem to have forgotten. If we can make it through a pandemic and actually thrive we can surely handle this," he said.
"We’ll have more material posted soon, so stay tuned," he added.
Other restaurants have posted similar signs in recent months, including in Florida where Debary Diner told customers to dine elsewhere if they voted for Biden.

"If you voted for and continue to support and stand behind the worthless, inept and corrupt administration currently inhabiting the White House that is complicit in the death of our servicemen and women in Afghanistan, please take your business elsewhere," the sign read.

No criminal charges to be filed over death of man at Racine Co. Jail

RACINE, Wis. — The Racine County District Attorney will not file criminal charges against sheriff's office staff after a man died in the jail last year.
The attorney representing the family of Malcolm James was one of the first to speak during the press conference, held inside a small event space in Racine. Kevin O'Connor said on Wednesday night, for the first time, family members watched video from body-worn cameras. O'Connor said the video shows James gasping for breath for three minutes before he goes limp.
"Following a physical struggle and subdual by multiple officers the deceased became unresponsive while strapped in a restraint chair," said O'Connor while he addressed a small crowd at the press conference, at times, reading from a medical examiner's report.
The Kenosha County Sheriff's Office was appointed as an outside agency to lead an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Malcolm James. Based on that report, video evidence, and expert opinions, the Racine County District Attorney reached the conclusion that "There are no charges that could be filed in the death of Malcolm James that can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt."
Ahead of the announcement Thursday morning, the district attorney's office released their review of the incident, dated Jan. 5, 2022. The office said in an accompanying statement that District Attorney Tricia Hanson met with the family and loved ones of James on Wednesday.

Vos wants election investigation done by end of January

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos wants the investigation he ordered into the 2020 election to conclude by the end of the month, even as legal fights over subpoenas issued to mayors and the state’s top elections official remain unresolved.
Vos' spokeswoman, Angela Joyce, said Thursday that Vos has asked lead investigator Michael Gableman for recommendations by February “so we can have legislation passed by the end of this session.”
The session is currently scheduled to end in March. A spokesman for Gableman did not immediately return a message. WisPolitics.com first reported that Vos and Gableman had agreed to verbally extend Gableman’s contract that ended on Dec. 31.

Racine Police closes department offices to public due to increase in COVID cases

RACINE — The Racine Police announced on Wednesday that due to the rise in COVID cases, the department offices will be closed off to the public. Anyone who needs to go inside will have to use the drive-through window instead.
This will last for the next 14 days.
Racine Police made the statement on a Facebook post and did not elaborate on the decision.
Wisconsin saw the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday compared to any day since the pandemic began.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services' COVID-19 dashboard recorded 8,058 confirmed cases on Monday. That's compared to the previous daily record of 7,870 cases on Nov. 17, 2020.
Janes Elementary in Racine moving virtual due to staff shortage

RACINE, Wisc. — Janes Elementary in Racine will move to remote learning for Thursday due to a staff shortage.
According to the Racine Unified School District, students should log on to Google Classroom at the normal start time of 9:05 a.m.

Nasty winter weather in store for Wednesday
MILWAUKEE — Southeast Wisconsin residents are in for a rough Wednesday as snow and strong winds along with frigid temperatures move in.
Storm Team 4 predicts an average accumulation of around 1" on Wednesday. Highs are forecasted around 20 degrees but could plummet into the teens - with wind chills around zero. We could see some wind gusts at over 40 miles per hour.
"We're looking at some pretty gross weather," TMJ4 Meteorologist Brian Niznansky said on the noon show Tuesday.
This also comes after a few snow showers possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory was issued starting midnight Tuesday into 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
While the snow will not likely be a problem for residents in the cities, where there is more consistent snow-plowing, it could be an issue for more rural residents. Conditions are even rougher when you factor in those high winds.

Racine in-person learning despite COVID concerns
RACINE, Wis. - School district leaders have been debating how to safely resume classes after the holiday break. The Racine Unified School District will move forward with in-person learning starting Wednesday, Jan. 5 despite concerns regarding further spread of COVID-19.
The decision came after a request from the Racine Educators United, calling on the district to shift to virtual learning in the short term amid a list of other requests. Like in nearby Kenosha, the district is moving forward with in-person learning.
On the last day of their extended holiday break, the Racine Educators United sent a list of six requested changes to the district, hoping to make the return to classes safe.
"In-person learning, we know that's the most effective way for children to learn, but our concern is with the current explosion of COVID positivity rates in the community," said Angelina Cruz, Racine Educators United president.
The list includes a short-term return to virtual learning until case numbers decline, increased access to testing and vaccines and more.
"We want to ensure everyone's safety so that we can be in buildings with students as soon as possible and for as long as possible," said Cruz.
In a statement to FOX6 News, district leaders said the plan is to return to in-person classes Wednesday, saying: "We'll continue to utilize our safety protocol, including PPE for students and staff, and work together to keep our students and staff safe, healthy and in school learning."
On Monday, the Kenosha Unified School Board voted to expand virtual learning for elementary and middle school students after hearing from dozens of parents who urged them not to transition the entire district to virtual learning.
Still, some parents, like Dana Cruz, fear the change falls short, citing the stress her daughter feels in high school.
"She's concentrating more on staying healthy than actually being able to concentrate on her work at school," said Dana Cruz.
Kenosha's reopening of access to virtual learning officially begins Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Racine Unified will continue to offer on-site testing at three schools while closely monitoring local COVID-19 metrics.
