RACINE — The Racine Zoo is asking for the public's help in naming its emperor tamarin twins.

The baby tamarins were born on December 22 to Amelie, who also was born at the Racine Zoo, and Pitino. According to the zoo, the pair is the fifth and sixth offspring in the past three years.

"These girls are important to the overall North American population of emperor tamarins, which happens to be male-heavy. Once old enough, they will each likely be paired up with their own mates for breeding,” said Racine Zoo’s Primary Primate Specialist, Crystal Champeau.

Now, the baby girls just need names. The zoo has compiled a list of names for the public to vote from starting now! The zoo will then announce the winning names on March 2.

So, what are your options? Gabriella / Gianna, Giulietta / Giovanna, Zarina / Zita, and Caterina / Carmella.

You can head to the zoo's survey monkey to vote on your favorite name pairing.

The Racine Zoo has also put together a baby shower wish list for anyone who wants to support the babies and the rest of the tamarins at the zoo. If you purchase any items, you can ship them directly to the zoo.

RACINE — Racine Mayor Cory Mason announced Thursday that he signed an executive order suspending the mask mandate, effective at noon.

Now, the common council will vote on making the suspension permanent during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

“I have been in discussion with the Public Health Department for several weeks, monitoring the trend of the case rate of COVID-19 in our community. With the decline in cases, the Public Health Department is comfortable suspending enforcement on the City’s mask ordinance and recommend the ordinance be permitted to expire at next week’s meeting of the Common Council,” said Mason.

The mayor emphasized that this does not mean the pandemic is over, and his executive order could be repealed on Tuesday.

"I encourage everyone to continue to take precautions they feel are best to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Mason.

Snow keeps Racine Douglas Hardware staff busy

From Fox6Now:

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for all of southeast Wisconsin until Friday morning, Feb. 25, with the heaviest snow expected near the lake and 2-4" expected in most areas.

Ahead of the storm, FOX6 stopped by Douglas Hardware in Racine. The owner said after the storm is when he expects to get busiest, so they made sure to be stocked up on salt and ready for lots of customers Friday.

Owner Jim Seeger said it helps to plan ahead.

"If you get the salt down before the snow hits, then it usually helps, so it doesn’t get real hard and stick to the concrete," said Seeger. "Same with the steps and that. You don’t want them to be slippery before or after it snows, so put the salt down early."

WEC Receives Election Bribery Complaint About Racine City Officials

Racine Mayor Mason And Racine Clerk Coolidge Accused Of Violating The Prohibition On Election Bribery In A Criminal Complaint Filed With The Wisconsin Elections Commission

Outside consultant Ryan Chew to Milwaukee Elections Clerk – “Damn Claire, you have a flair for drama, delivering just the margin needed at 3:00 a.m.”

City of Milwaukee wanted to spend outside private money on edgy campaign to “harness current protests”

Feb. 23, 2022

By Brett Healy

Two Racine residents, Sandy Weidner and Kim Morrison, filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Election Commission on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022 against the Mayor of Racine alleging he illegally took over $900,000 from an outside private group, the Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL), to “facilitate in-person and absentee voting.”

The complaint alleges that taking the private money and using it for get out the vote (GOTV) efforts which campaigns normally pay for, using it to pay for clearly illegal drop boxes and using it to target only certain individuals within the city rather than every city resident to vote violates “the election bribery prohibition of Wisconsin Statutes ss 12.11.

CTCL approached just five cities originally in Wisconsin to offer substantial private money to supposedly assist with elections and election administration during a pandemic. The five cities – Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Kenosha and Racine – are thoroughly controlled by Democrats and have historically overwhelmingly supported the Democratic candidate in Presidential elections. While CTCL did eventually hand out money to municipalities in other parts of the state, including some areas considered conservative leaning, the vast majority of the money, $8.8 million out of the $10 million total, CTCL handed out in Wisconsin went to the five cities. CTCL referred to them as the “Wisconsin 5,” in documents provided with the complaint.

Suspect dead; sought in Racine firefighter death, officials say

From Fox6Now:

The Racine Police Department said on Wednesday, Feb. 23 that a suspect who was identified in the homicide of Racine Firefighter Christopher Lalor is dead.

A Florida sheriff's office found the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Peter Lui, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Racine Police Chief Maurice Robinson on Tuesday offered few details on the investigation – hoping to protect it.

"Rest assured that we are working on this, we are working on this diligently," Robinson said Tuesday. A criminal complaint told more of the story.

According to investigators, Lalor was found dead in the basement of his Pinehurst Avenue home by his mother on Sunday morning, Feb. 20. She was worried when he did not text her back.

Police said they found five spent casings near Lalor's body, but did not find a gun.

Using a neighbor's doorbell camera, investigators saw someone driving an orange SUV go to Lalor's home Friday afternoon, Feb. 18 and leave a few hours later. They tracked the registration of that SUV to Lui. Lalor's family told police that the victim and suspect in the homicide case were long-time friends and former roommates.

The complaint also stated Lui lived at an apartment on Racine's north side, and he had changed his Facebook profile picture after leaving Lalor's home Friday to an image that read: "That which does not kill me should run."

Police believe Lui did run, which was confirmed Wednesday by the Jacksonville County Sheriff's Office in Florida. He was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

As Lalor's colleagues continue to mourn, firefighters are planning a service to honor Lalor for his 21 years of service.

"Let the legacy of firefighter Chris Lalor motivate you to lift up the community around you. Firefighter Chris Lalor will not be forgotten," Racine Fire Captain Craig Ford said Tuesday.

Racine police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this incident. Any witnesses, or citizens with information, are urged to call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756. Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 262-636-9330, or through the P3 app.

US Marshals capture Steven Avila; fugitive arrested in Racine

From Fox6Now:

The U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force along with agents from the Racine County Metro Drug Unit took federal fugitive Steven Avila into custody on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Law enforcement determined that Avila, 36, was in Racine. There was a federal warrant for possession with the intent to deliver cocaine out for him – and investigators learned he was at a residence on Blaine Avenue.

Officials say Avila is a convicted felon, a known gang member, and has a lengthy drug history. Agents conducted surveillance on the residence – and confirmed Avila’s presence, along-with ongoing drug activity.

Racine County Metro Drug agents and members of the U.S. Marshall’s conducted a search warrant at the residence and arrested Avila.

During the search, law enforcement located 446.9 grams of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $2,000; cocaine; digital scale; hundreds of baggies with the corners missing (i.e., drug packaging material); two quest cards; two cell phones; and $3,319 in U.S. currency.  In Avila’s bedroom, law enforcement located a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, a .22 caliber revolver, two tactical 12-gauge shotguns, and numerous rounds of ammunition.

The U.S. Marshall’s transported Avila to a federal holding facility where he was held on the federal warrant.

The Racine County Metro Drug Unit will be referring the following charges to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for federal prosecution:

  • Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver, as a Repeat Drug Offender
  • Possession of Cocaine, as a Repeat Drug Offender
  • Keeper of a Drug Place, as a Repeat Drug Offender
  • Possession of Firearm by a Felon (Four counts)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Racine firefighter death; homicide investigation underway

From Fox6Now:

The death of a Racine firefighter on Sunday, Feb. 20 is being investigated as a homicide.

Just before noon on Sunday, officers were sent to an address on Pinehurst Avenue in Racine in reference to a man not breathing. First responders located a deceased 50-year-old man. Officials say he was a 21-year veteran of the Racine Fire Department. Fire officials identified him as Christopher Lalor.

"It hits especially close to home," said Racine Mayor Cory Mason. "Obviously, our hearts go out to his family but also to his firefighting colleagues who are like family. They spend a lot of time with each other in close proximity, in training with each other."

Lalor most recently served as a driver-operator.

Mayor Mason said the city has extended mental health and other counseling resources to members of both the police and fire departments following Lalor's death.

"They're, of course, professional about it, but we're also concerned about them and we make sure they have resources available to make sure everyone's OK," said Mason.

Mason touted their courage to continue protecting the public even while battling their own tragedy.

Police haven't shared any information about who caused Lalor's death or what led up to it, wanting to protect their investigation. Neighbors told FOX6 that Lalor was friendly and quick to greet them with a wave and smile.

"We know that the entire city will feel this loss," said Mason.

The Racine Fire Department plans to address the situation at a Tuesday morning press conference.

Racine Police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this incident. Any witnesses, or citizens with information, are urged to call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756

Kenosha drug death; Racine woman charged in December 2021 incident

From Fox6Now:

Reanna Moon

A Racine woman faces a charge of first-degree reckless homicide in connection with the drug death of a woman in Kenosha in December. The accused is Reanna Moon.

According to the criminal complaint, Kenosha police were dispatched to a residence on 59th Street just west of 16th Avenue on Dec. 7, 2021 for a medical overdose call. Once on the scene, officers located the victim on the floor in a bedroom. They attempted CPR until the Kenosha Fire Department arrived. However, the victim was pronounced deceased.

A person in the residence told police she found the victim passed out, that she has a history of drug abuse, and had been "hanging around with Reanna Grimes-Moon (later identified as defendant Reanna M. Moon)," the complaint says.

A second person told officers "she believed that the person who would have supplied the drugs to (the victim) would be the defendant" -- and that "she is sure that the defendant was in the car that (the victim) had met up with that night," the complaint says.

When detectives downloaded data from the victim's cellphone, they found text conversations on her phone that referenced drug transactions. One of the phone numbers belonged to the defendant, the court paperwork says.

When questioned by police, Moon stated "that she went to (the victim's) residence to deliver heroin, which had been mixed with Benadryl, and some crack cocaine. The defendant admitted to brokering the deal along with delivering the drugs."

Moon made her initial appearance in Kenosha County court on Monday, Feb. 21. Cash bond was set at $100,000. Moon is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 1.
