Former President Donald Trump is returning to Wisconsin Saturday to deliver remarks in Prairie du Chien, a city that Republicans have seized on in recent weeks to argue illegal immigration affects the Midwestern state.
Republicans from Wisconsin, including U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden and Senate candidate Eric Hovde, have appeared on Fox News to highlight a case in Prairie du Chien where local police say they arrested a member of a Venezuelan gang after he assaulted a woman and her daughter in the western Wisconsin city along the Mississippi River.
Police said it was not a random attack, as one of the victims had brought the suspect to Prairie du Chien from Madison without knowing about his "violent tendencies." Police say they have not had contact with other members of the gang.
An advisory from the Trump campaign says the former president will "meet directly with local community leaders and residents to hear about how the (Vice President Kamala) Harris- (President Joe) Biden border crisis has devastated their home."
In a statement, Wisconsin Democratic Coordinated Campaign rapid response director Kristi Johnston said "there’s only one candidate with a proven record of taking on transnational gangs and drug traffickers, and that’s Vice President Harris."
"Donald Trump doesn’t care about securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system — he proved that when he killed the Border Patrol union-endorsed bipartisan border security bill to help himself politically," Johnston said.
The event is described as Trump delivering remarks, rather than his typical rallies in Wisconsin that have drawn hundreds of supporters to Green Bay, Waukesha, Racine and Mosinee over the past few months.
But the Trump campaign says general admission tickets are available for the event, which will take place at the Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center at 11:30 a.m.
Surrogates for Trump's campaign are also holding a bus tour across Wisconsin early this week, ending with a town hall event in Waukesha. Vice President Kamala Harris rallied in Madison on Friday, while her running mate Gov. Tim Walz visited Superior in mid-September.
