A chase involving Racine police officers ended Monday night with the car being chased crashing into a tree, killing the driver.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the death that occurred in the Village of Caledonia in Racine County.

Just after 9 p.m., Racine police officers initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run incident earlier in the day, a Tuesday morning news release from the DOJ said. The vehicle's driver did not comply, and officers initiated a pursuit. According to the release, the driver crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed near the intersection of Four Mile Road and Main Street, a largely residential area.

The release says law enforcement immediately began lifesaving measures, however, the driver died at the scene. Per agency policy, law enforcement personnel involved have been placed on administrative leave. The officers involved were wearing body cameras during the incident.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading this death investigation, assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, Village of Caledonia Police Department, Racine County Medical Examiner's Office and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.

DCI will turn over investigative reports to the Racine County District Attorney when the investigation concludes, the release says
