RACINE — Democratic vice presidential nominee Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz stopped in Racine on Tuesday evening as in-person absentee voting kicked off across the state.

Hosted at Memorial Hall, 72 Seventh St., the event concluded his day in Wisconsin, after traveling to Madison with former President Barack Obama.

At the rally in Racine, Walz urged the hundreds of attendees to vote early and spoke about Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’ plans to support health care and small businesses, and minimize costs for middle-class Americans.

“Fourteen days until the polls close, people," Walz said. "Fourteen days until this election, so we know it’s there. Look, we’re running like everything’s on the line because everything’s on the line.”

At the rally, Walz said Harris is “laying out a new way forward with opportunity for all of us.”

He discussed Harris’s plan to give up to $6,000 in tax credits for families and criticized price gouging in industries.

Walz said that despite claims from Republicans, they believe in capitalism, but capitalism is not “when you hear a hurricane’s coming to Florida and all of a sudden the airline’s jack up the price."

“They’re looking at a new generation of entrepreneurs, a new generation of making sure our kids thrive, and Kamala’s put out a plan to make sure small businesses can get $20,000 forgivable grant and then $50,000 tax credit to get them off the ground and to make a difference,” said Walz, adding that “it’s time to give the tax cuts to the middle class.”

Access to reproductive health care was also a prominent topic in Walz’s speech, with him mentioning that he and his wife used fertility treatments.

“I’ll be damned if anyone, let alone Donald Trump and JD Vance, should have any damn say in the family that you have, of stopping you from having that,” he said.

He also said that when Harris is elected, along with a Democratic senate and house, Harris will sign Roe v. Wad back into law.

He called on men specifically to vote for the vice president.

“So I’ll tell you what, guys, we’re going to have to get this right," Walz said. "We’re going to have to get to the polls. We’re going to have to vote because the women are doing their job, we need to do ours right now.”

Walz spoke to the crowd about the necessity of voting, saying that while some people say they made it through one Trump term, the stakes are higher in this election.

“The Donald Trump of 2016 who was elected is not the Donald Trump of today by any stretch of the imagination,” Walz said. “He is talking now, openly, about sending the United States military against people who don’t support him.”

Walz pushed back on the “both sides” claims from some people, saying, “You’re not hearing Democratic politicians talking about sending the military against people.”

He told the crowd that the way to prevent this from happening is by “beating them at the ballot box,” calling on people to vote.

“Look, 14 days. We’re still the underdogs in this thing," Walz said. "We have got to leave it all on the field. This is the time.”

Both the Democratic and Republican campaigns have prioritized stops in Wisconsin leading up to the Nov. 5 election.

Vance is expected to be in Racine on Monday to deliver remarks at Memorial Hall.
