I was talking with drew and Layla at the picnic yesterday about Microsoft's pre-order offer on Windows 7, their new operating system that is getting good reviews. Here's the scoop:
"Windows 7 is coming on October 22, 2009. Here's an easy way to get it fast and save a bunch: Pre-order a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49 or a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $99. That's about half off the estimated retail prices. This offer is available through participating retailers. Pick one below and pre-order today. They'll tell you how to get your copy when Windows 7 is available.
"The offer begins on June 26, 2009 and will continue while supplies last, or until July 11, 2009, whichever comes first."

I am seriously contemplating this. The guy who mentored me into computers advised waiting until the first service pack comes out before buying a new operating system, but with prices like these, I don't know that I can afford to wait.

It is very tempting, however, If I crashed or couldn't get on the internet, I'd probably grok. Ya, I know, hale, wrong usage! (but still fun to say)
Here's the link to buy it direct from MS: http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-Windows-7/category/102.
Note that if you are upgrading from XP, you will have to backup and/or save all of your files and info, do a clean install of Windows 7, and then reinstall you software and stuff. (My concern is about 7's compatibility with some of my old software and hardware.) If you're running Vista, you can do a regular upgrade.
My spare computer is actually more of a machine than this one. I'm thinking of ordering 7 for the spare machine and then continuing with this one. When 7 arrives, I'll install it on the other machine and take time to see how it works out.
I love XP, but they're going to stop supporting it no matter what. That's how big business operates: if it works, fix it.
Hey Orbs, thanks for the hot tip! Barbara will be getting this for sure, she's one of those techie geek types.
I run both on my Mac...I have Vista Business (got it for free from someone at Microsoft at a AAS meeting). I have heard lots of good things about Windows 7 so I will probably do this pretty quick.
Some Vista users are ticked off that they aren't being given more of a discount, especially those who bought Ultimate:

I've been loosely following the development of 7 on the net. Almost all of the talk is good. Essentially, everyone seems to agree that it is what Vista should have been.
Oh yeah, I also downloaded one of the betas of Windows 7 to the other machine with the intention of trying it out. Of course, I never got around to installing and activating it.
