THAT'S COLD .......
AP News : vcstar.com : Ventura County Star: "OAK LAWN, Ill. (AP) -- A car salesman in suburban Chicago has been fired for refusing to remove a Green Bay Packers tie that he wore to work the day after the Packers beat the Chicago Bears to advance to the Super Bowl.
John Stone says he wore the Packers tie to work Monday at Webb Chevrolet in Oak Lawn to honor his late grandmother, who was a big Green Bay fan.
The sentimental gesture did not impress his boss, Jerry Roberts.
Roberts says the dealership has done promotions involving the Bears and he was afraid the tie could alienate the team's fans and make it harder to sell cars.
Roberts adds that Stone was offered five chances to take off the tie but he refused."

I have seen and heard this story so many times.
IMO, it has less to do with him wearing a Packer tie in Bear country, it has more to do with insubordination. He was told FIVE times to take it off. THEN he was fired. Would the same thing have happened if the Bears had won? I doubt it, and him throwing in the "Grand Mother card" was a little too much. It's all about dressing correctly for your job.
JMHO
MC, actually I agree with you. When I was working we use to send people home for improper dress. Holes in the shirts or jeans, or the wording on their t-shirts.
5 times...he had it coming
I briefly saw this news story mentioned. I don't know... kind of a stretch that this tie would cost the employer sales. I'm thinking there was a bigger beef with this employee that preceded this.
He wasn't showing too much skin, wasn't unclean or too casually dressed, wasn't wearing profanity. He was just stating his opinion...
Kinda surprised that irregulars would consent that forcing one sided opinions and restricting free speech is acceptable. just saying....
I managed a franchised auto repair shop in Chicago in the late 1980's. If my assistant had shown up wearing a Packers tie under the same circumstances, I would have demanded that he remove it. (Bears fans do NOT like the Packers.) If he refused, my Service Mgr. would have removed it for him. I agree with MC that "It's all about dressing correctly for your job." In retail, you don't piss off potential customers.
wow, I'm outnumbered on this one, it's a tie, not something vulgar, I think one of our dealerships up here should snatch this guy up.
Everywhere you go there are those little rules..and most of the time you have to 'find' them.In Sales it's the image you create for the dealership.
To continue...if I wore a GB shirt I'd have been sent home to change. One girl new to the office scene said she was NOT going to make coffee. I thought she has a lot of growing up to do. Besides you make good $$ when making coffee in the office. You certainly can't wear your nurse's uniform in a bar. It's rules your employer set up...like them or quit.
This reminds me when I worked for a Job Shop, the owner drove a Lincoln, he was working on a contract with GM, on the day the big wigs from GM showed up, he drove his wife's caddy to work!
