A Question for Hale

The Earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust.

Hale, how much truth you think there is to this?

That's the number I see quotes by meteorite experts on a regular basis. It sounds like a lot, but really isn't much compared to the mass of the Earth. The mass of the Earth is about 5.96*10^26kg. So 100 tons per day is 100000kg. Given that rate of mass accumulation (assuming it is constant) it would take the Earth 1.63*10^19 years to double in mass. This is over a billion times the current age of the universe!

So over the course of the next few billion years, Earth is not going to gain that much mass in the cosmic scheme of things!
