Will there finally be an outcry that can be heard? When the powers that be decided to hit public employees where it hurts for health care and pensions, (benefits that had bargained for in place of yearly monetary raises) everyone thought it was a great idea. Yea, let them pay more, private sector has been paying more. was the public cry. They neglected to see that those workers never received the same percentage of raises the private sector did when times were good. The public sector chose instead to invest in the future, only to have it ripped away, no negotiations allowed.
Racine has had the best of the best decide to retire and leave education in droves because they could see that retirement was a better option than continuing to work in an under-appreciated position where more and more is heaped upon them each year. It has happened across the state.
Yes, there are new teachers claiming those positions; however, the years of experience and the higher level of learning that our seasoned teachers had is gone... in education, experience matters.
So, can we expect the same to happen to our police, fire and emergency workers? Do we really want that? Or, do we choose to keep experienced and reliable people in those positions?
You make the call. Get informed and VOTE. The little bit of difference it makes for each taxpayer might be worth it. Besides, the politicians will probably just fund something else with the savings they realize by screwing the hard working people, as they did with educators.
